M market watch

dont blame you for walking away op.
all starting to look decidedly dodgy :(
far too much just does not stack up.
as they say, if it seems too good to be true, it usually is.

it starts to make me somewhat suspicious of the dealer.
there not stupid, and will have done their research before buying the car, or are they selling on a sale or return.
you dont lump out that sort of money as a dealer without doing your checks.
it would not be good for there reputation, if this car is iffy whether they were aware or not.

Looking very dubious!
Look carefully at the numbers on the mileage in the service book and it looks like the same person has written them. (6's & 8's have the same flow and the flow of the letters in the signatures is also similar) - But at least they used different coloured pens

Great spots on the aftermarket stamp and detail

Another car to file under ‘cheap for a reason’

I’ll pass this information onto the dealer for him to deal with it as he sees fit.

call me cynical, but dealers are neither naive or stupid.
they know far more than seems apparent in my opinion.
they will know what that car was worth both trade value and retail.
dealers do not sell genuine cars too cheap for any reason.
they are there to make as much money as possible.
its priced low for a reason, and am suprised any reputable dealer would want to get involved.jmo

At that price I’m not surprised!

If any parties here are interested in the car, I just wanted to add something else that I looked into.

There are BMW stamps which I thought were official but I called BMW GB and the ID number doesn’t come up or the name. When I called the phone number the line was dead and the code is for Surrey when the car was based in the North for a lot of it’s life.

There may be paperwork to substantiate this so I would check with the trader but a bit strange. As is the following stamp as per below which says ‘Independent specialist’ with no number. Again there may be paperwork for this but worth checking.

Be careful with that one, stamp looks very dodgy:

The IDs are different 71175 as opposed to 77135.

So wouldn’t worry about that.

Best way to verify would be to call BMW Customer Services and ask for a history report so you could ascertain whether the history on their records matches that of the book...

But in general I would just avoid this car.

who are lakewood bmw???
a quick google search throws up nothing in the uk :?

in the good old usa, long way to go for a service.
not much thought went in to that.
if your going to use a dodgy service stamp, at least pick somewhere that could be feasible, even if they are no longer in business.

What I'm saying is that very similar stamps are very easy to come by. Without further proof that service book is worthless.

Telephone number is Weybridge, the BMW dealer there is Cooper's in Cobham.

There are a few people on ebay who can give you a list of all visits that a car has made to the BMW dealer network. I think you only need the last seven letters / digits of the chassis number.
This will give a list of dates, dealer location, mileage and whether it was service or repair. Not a lot of detail, but certainly a help in mileage verification!

I used this when I bought my car since the service book was missing ... search for ebay item 283419904383

Iffy history doesn't always mean a bad car., what it does is affect value & by the sheer interest registered in it you can't say price doesn't reflect "possible" issues that need ironing out.
OK it's never going to tick all boxes for many but it could still tick some for someone

That is spot on. I couldn’t let this go even after I pulled out of the viewing !

It will niggle you throughout the time you will own it. I would let it go. Spend a few bob more and get a cleaner car even if slightly higher miles...

I wish some of these E86's were up for sale at those prices when I was bloody looking for one back in Nov :headbang: !

I love my E85, even more so in weather like we had today, but every time I see the Coupe I just know it was what my heart was lusting for, but my wallet effectively cockblocked from happening!

Even if there are some small issues, as long as it would pass a pre purchase inspection, I would happily offer up my E85+difference to get my hands on one. But my old man got stung so badly with his E46 M3 Individual, that on the surface seemed to stunning, but eventually after owning it for 6 months the true problems started to rise to the surface and cost him thousands get put right.

I think it definitely proves again that it's well worth spending a few quid more and buying a well known forum car. You can trace a much truer reflection of history just through the posts.

This digital trail is becoming ever more valuable against MOT’s & service history which typically only happen once a year.

... I bought mine specifically for this reason as have ownership threads on here from someone who previously owned it from 15k (& has a buy back option)
