M market watch

Also didn't have an MOT in 2010, which is odd as the mileage suggests it was being used reasonably frequently. That said mine missed a year as it was SORNd and I committed the cardinal sin of leaving her in the garage for 18 months.

Dodgy mot records is an absolute nightmare for most people when it comes to buying/selling. Is it possible to find out whether it has been clocked, or whether the MOT records are simply incorrect?

What does the mileage say at the next mot in 2012?

Edit: just checked the MOT history and it's definitely been clocked around 20k miles, not to mention the amount of advisories/failures on the system :o that's been driven hard

I thought these cars had a tamper dot appear on the dash if the mileage had been altered? Also, I remember reading that the lcm stores the mileage aswell as a few other electronic bits too, so maybe you'll need a laptop plugged in to get the true mileage?

Either way, complete nightmare to sell on.

Thanks for the MOT history Sohail, with that, the above is what I've pieced together....

Seems the first MOT was out versus service records then readdressed in 2011.

Human error on the first perhaps?

I’d also suggest u carefully check this car’s not a ‘ringer’

- chassis nos (all of them)
- engine nos

That bit about the colour mismatch/mistake now has my spidy senses tingling!!!!!

I wouldn't worry too much Jem, as a former Ruby Black owner I can also back up the fact mine was registered as red originally as apparently they only looked at the first word of the colour description. So there is a discrepancy on all Ruby black cars it appears, having a colour change listed very early on.

Why? There have been quite a few Ruby black cars on here registered as Red with the DVLA.

Maybe, though was referring to the possibility of being ringed, clocked or cut-n-shut... where slight disparities are the early clues to follow

I have to say the seller comes across as very well. He basically said if you follow the paper trail of service history then the mileage is fine but the MOT is a concern as doesn't tie out. The choice is therefore yours to make.

I put a holding deposit of £500 on it and was planning to view this afternoon at 3pm.

Doing the quick breakdown, it just doesn't sit well with me. May well have been human error on the MOT but can't be sure.

Id put that down to human error - its not the first mileage discrepancy I've seen on MOT records.

Get the trader to email a picture of the speedo cluster to see if there is a tamper dot.

I don't think there is any way of changing the MOT records so you might have hassle if you decide to sell.

Maybe the mileage was blocked as opposed to clocked.

Either way I would walk away from that.

I’d only buy it if I had a buyer in Germany

Spend a couple of grand more and get one that checks out.

The first 2 MOT's are going to cause trouble in the future.

Agreed. I was looking forward to seeing this but the MOT issue has taken the shine off so pulled out. The trader was very decent about it and sending the holding deposit back .

He has a list of 9 people who are as keen as I was so expect it to be gone before long.

Thanks all for your comments and advice on this!

Shows Coupe market’s still strong as ever...

At that price I’m not surprised!

If any parties here are interested in the car, I just wanted to add something else that I looked into.

There are BMW stamps which I thought were official but I called BMW GB and the ID number doesn’t come up or the name. When I called the phone number the line was dead and the code is for Surrey when the car was based in the North for a lot of it’s life.

There may be paperwork to substantiate this so I would check with the trader but a bit strange. As is the following stamp as per below which says ‘Independent specialist’ with no number. Again there may be paperwork for this but worth checking.

Clearly lots of M's have been tempered, looking at the european market on sites like Mobile.de.
Steering wheels more worn than mine (at 100kkm) despite 30000km odometer etc.

Be careful with that one, stamp looks very dodgy:
