M market watch

If they're selling so quickly as seems to be the case for a lot of cars mentioned in this thread then i can see the price creeping up even more. When you look at the prices for the 1M and CSL then these look a complete bargain, even at 20k, and people are starting to realise this.

Great news for us owners as it means we can either wrap it up and potentially make a little money, or use it and lose a pittance/nothing :D

Not sure the prices are going to "make a little money", cost of servicing, insurance, tax, storage, cleaning products etc for any one year would probably still outstrip any appreciation.

Even so, it helps to minimise costs

Yep, agreed. If you service these cars correctly, and fit decent tyres etc, I can't see you making any real money at all, unless you don't drive them, but there is no fun in that, and if you wanted an investment, I'm sure there are plenty of other options!

What makes these cars great is at present, they are not really depreciating like most other cars, so the cost to own them and run them if you buy cash is a bargain for the performance.

Saving on the depreciation is really what counts, as it's usually the biggest expense during ownership, especially with newer cars.

I rang up for one on AT today to be told it had sold within an hour. Interlagos Blue coupe, 36K miles, £17K.

:headbang: That's so annoying isn't it, had it happen to me several times!
I saw that one you mentioned and thought it looked really tidy.
Have you seen this one? http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi...h-big-service-ii-just-done-immaculate/3704580
A bit more pricey than the Interlagos one but looks a well written advert and very well looked after.

Seen that but the price is a little on the high side for me.

There are several cars that I have fancied but work commitments, holidays etc, have meant that I have not been quick enough to view the car. Dealers are also very quick to get to anything decent on a private sale. My attention is now turning to a E90 M3 as I can get the kids in the back.

Z4M is still first choice though.

I completely agree that any money made soon disappears once you start actually using it and as mentioned, this rise in prices only serves to balance out the ownership costs of a moderately used car. But by wrapping it up i meant storing it/barely using it. No tax if you SORN it, no need to clean it if its covered and storage is free if you have a garage  There also isn't much need for consumables or inspections then so even with the odd change of oil and brake fluid it's concieveable that you 'could' make money. I can't see it being anything significant but that wasn't my point. :)

I hadn't realised how expensive 1Ms are :o

£35k - £40k for lower mileage examples. Ouch

Their price hasn't really changed since release, always hovered around the £40k mark. If you one new and kept it for 4 years, put 30k on it, you'd be able to sell pretty much for purchase price. Incredible really.

Was the 1M price predictable? Personally I thought they were going to drop massively in price - how wrong I was. First M car that's arguably not an M and it holds it's value.

Why not an ///M? Due to the turbos?

I guess the level of performance it delivered for £40k, plus in the UK was only available in limited edition numbers (450?) and was widely lauded in the press upon release, always looked like a winner.

That said, I don't think anybody expected it to be depreciation immune for the first 4 years of its existence.

Has this one been mentioned? Mega pricey for mileage, year and spec. 59k, 2006, Nav and heated seats... No cruise or PDC.

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=221693909522

Also paint lacks lustre, exhausts are choked black and the drivers seat really needs a mega clean...! Not particularly well prepped I'd say!!

That isnt too far from me,and they usually have a lot of monies worth of cars around them..

They do employ the "high pressure" sales thing when you go in there... I went to have a look at a car there 18 months ago.I did like it but snagged it on a few things, they agreed to do it but had to sign on the line for it that day.. I said that i wanted a test drive before i did anything, but they couldnt get the car out on the day..

I told them to call me when they had sorted there sh!t out....They did,but 7 days later..... I didnt end up buying it.

Due to a non special engine. Usuallly they have M specific engines - the 1M engine although had some improvements was just a tweaked non-M engine. Obviously that is the future but surprised me people would rate it that highly for it to hold it's value so well for 4+ years.
Also, many clips I first saw showed wheel spinning everywhere. I thought the orange piping stitching on the interior was a bit Halfordsey, and car looked a bit chavved up. I just didn't think people who had the money to spend would want to spend really good money on them as 2nd hand buys

Completely agree, great points!!

But then again it costs money to run any car- I got a great deal on my Fiesta St3 due to employee discount and even that will cost £4k or so over 2 years in depreciation alone although it shouldn't cost anything else other than tax and insurance. Whereas with my z4m coupe it cost me £500 tax and £260 for a tyre over 12 months so a bargain compared to the performance as I sold it for the same price I bought it for even though it was bought from a main dealer.

Hence I just bought another one as the only other cars I was seriously interested in where 911s- and at the price point I was looking I could get a private sale car and the possibility of major failiure seemed pretty high and cost prohibitive. There aren't many cars out there with the same residual potential and reasonable(ish) running costs as the Z4m so a bit of man maths allowed me to reason that rather than buying something relatively safe such as a nearly new mx5 would probably actually cost me about the same as the M as an ownership proposition.

But maybe I've convinced myself and I'm the guy who sold his e30 M3 for about £8k a few years ago and getting back into that car know would cost £25k plus!!

I'd guess that's had the tips replaced with black exhaust tips a la some e92s but nevertheless that is big money for the spec as I paid a quite a bit less for my same colour combo with PDC and just 10k more miles.
