///M exhaust cat back system

For those interested, this is what ///Molly currently sounds like. Lots of exhaust gases escaping and after jacking her up it seems to be the clamp area to the NS rear can.

Now that I've seen the damage, an engineer/fabricator should be able to sort that out for you relatively cheaply and easily. I've never seen those clamps rust like that before, it's almost as if they've been dissolved. Perhaps there's been a leak for some time, because they've not been clamped tight enough, which has let exhaust gases and water vapour out (= Nitric Acid etc.) which has accelerated the corrosion.

Even I wouldn't dare to try to claim against the Council with that as my evidence!

The clamp corrosion is very common on E46 M3's....

It looks to me like the clamp has cracked and lost its clamping force... The o ring has then fallen out causing the blow..

I cant make my mind up what im seeing on the last pic though..Is that the centre section cracked where it meets the rear box?

I suggest going to your nearest exhaust fabricator,im sure they will be able to repair that fairly easily..

The Hayward and Scott Cat-Back system sounds awesome. I have it fitted on my car and I can highly recommend it although it is quite loud (although not ridiculous) and in higher gears at really low revs under full throttle it can be a little noisy but at 2-3k revs through the gears it's not much louder than stock.

When I went to have mine fitted they were very helpful :)

Cant see any other damage apart from the main flange on the x-pipe luckily. All else looks in good nick, its just those end units. Half sheared off and as exdos says, reckon its been slightly going for a while, hence the disintigration via gases turning to water. Offside looks okay bit will be checking too. If Im going for the repair then ot makes sense to do both sides once the centre section is off.

Great to hear. Where did you get yours fitted?
Looks like I may have sourced a good condition oem x pipe and mufflers too. I have options which is great

That's the same sort of corrosion I had on mine (but not as bad), and was part of the reason for the delay in getting the Diablos fitted. In the end they needed cutting through.

I got mine fitted at Hayward and Scott after purchasing the back boxes off of Flatout.

The X-pipe and boxes from H&S connect via a sleeve so I got the X pipe made up new which took 2/3 weeks from memory and fitting about 1.5/2hours.

I'm sure you could get the H&S X-pipe to connect to the standard back boxes as the X-Pipe from H&S was relatively cheap I didn't bother modding it and replaced the standard one as I understand it modifying the connection on your backboxes and only replacing the X-Pipe may be an option (it may be cheaper as the boxes are the expensive bit).

Thanks again

Quick question on the x-pipe only option. If I was to install aftermarket into stock mufflers would it result in any loss of performance and/or torque?

From messing with previous cars I'd guess at a slight loss of torque bottom end and slightly more power up top.

Should give an extra bit of noise too without being too far from OEM.

 that's what I was hoping.

Hayward and Scott just quoted me £420 incl vat for a fitted x-pipe. They would need to weld flanges onto the pipe in order to attach to the OEM mufflers but its an easy job. More expensive than I thought considering for another £570 you can get the H&S cans as well (£990).

So...

1) H&S new x-pipe fitted £420
2) H&S full catback fitted £920
3) OEM new x-pipe pipe £700 + fitting
4) Supersprint x-pipe £450 + fitting
5) Weld repair creating new flanges on existing x-pipe £???

What would you do?! :|
