Leak?

I reckon something is out of line, either the roof or the a pillar etc, but as they wouldnt send it away to their so called monsoon centre, I guess I'll never know. When the DP told us it wasn't going to the monsoon centre, but instead having more seals changed, he was adamant it would fix it. At the time we said to him he couldn't be so sure cos they simply dont know what is wrong, and are guessing. The point of the monsoon centre was to stop the guessing and messing at the dealer. He wanted us to wait until this stage before rejecting....had we done so, we would be 3 weeks delayed.

I think other people have had leaks fixed with seals, but mine was always a "bugger" and dont forget, its done it from the very start (I think within a week of collection). So if a car is generally ok, then starts to leak, it may well be the seals that are failing.

I asked for 3 things....replacement car, auto box, cash compensation. He's always said if a replacement is authorised it will be "like for like" and has always put the auto box (hill start) down.

It was put to me that if I didn't want a replacement, and was happy to keep this one, then they might give me £1500 - £2000 instead. Whilst thats a nice amount of cash, we would never be happy with this car, so that isn't good enough.

I dont think he has pushed our case very hard in respect of getting us extra compensation. He said to me today no other compensation, and the replacement car would basically be taking us back to where we should've been on day 1.

ok, but the car was still sold with a missing feature, and to say its going back to day 1 is totally ignoring the hassle we've had. I shall at least be pushing for the £350 that seems standard for hill start, and also want something for the hassle, cos thats not fair.

However, it could be they wouldn't normally swap the car due to a leak, and they've done so because of the hassle, so I'll have to see.

If they wont budge, and are adament its like day 1, then they can pay the £150-200 to have it detailed, like I did the day after I collected it (and my salesman knows thats genuine).

Failing any extra compo, the main thing for us was getting it replaced cos we just dont have confidence in it now. The fact that this weeks work still hasn't worked is probably what made them agree to replace, and does back up my fears. I appreciate a replacement could have issues, but I'm hoping this was a lemon.

The DP is on holiday now for a week (he phoned me from the train station...I heard the announcement saying his train was delayed!). I appreciate him phoning me. I can deal with the head of sales now. But I'm gonna phone BMW Financial services on Monday to discuss the compo further (and check he hasn't accepted the £350 on my behalf as Carol's dealer originally did!). So although a replacement is on the cards, which I am grateful for, they havent actually given me any more than I've paid for. I might sound ungrateful to push for more, but a friend said this is their 1st offer, so I should push a bit harder. Will see what happens.

Get mine back tomorrow so at least I can use it in the sun. I'll keep it till the replacement arrives. I dont care about it leaking now, but wont be spending the next 8+ weeks in a loaner!

How confident are you that they will fix the leak in the new car Kevin? I am not that confident with BMW at the moment

Well considering no one else has had anything like my current leak, I'm confident that the new car wont have it. Tim had something similar but much less severe, and his has been ok since he put the krytonite :) on it.

I reckon I'll still get some ingress if blasting with a hose, but thats obviously manageable.

No one else has reported leaks like mine, so unless everyones been lying, then I should be ok. I'm basing my hope on the fact no ones had it this bad.

Surely two random cars off the production line at 6 month intervals cant do the same? :o

Seeing Carols good news that her car is due next Saturday, I thought I better update this.

As you know, a replacement car was authorised, but no compensation.

I tried to add DAB radio to the car and pay for it separately, but wasn't allowed to make any changes. I still don't understand why, cos if I paid for it separately, then it wouldn't affect the finance, but they said the agreement was for a car with a certain spec, so the replacement must match that spec. They wouldn't budge, but my salesman tells me BMW are about to release a DAB retrofit kit that is fully integrated and probably about £299, so if they ever switch analogue radio off, I wont be stuffed.

The replacement car has been ordered. I had to go in and confirm the spec of the new order against the spec of my original order. Despite my salesman going over it and ticking off each option, he missed de-badging...not a biggie, but I dont want them to scratch the car removing the badges, so they added that (exact like for like remember!). Car is due last day of Sept.

Spent a day on the phone to BMW Customer Services and BMW Financial services regarding compensation. I got past the "talk to your dealer" rubbish from customer services and explained the situation. They reviewed the case and came back and said no compensation as they were being generous in replacing the car! I explained that replacing the car was the minimum they should do and compensation for hill start and hassle were seperate, but they wouldn't move.

So I nearly gave up on it, but after talking to Carol I decided to have 1 last try and went to BMW financial services. I explained that I'm grateful for the replacement car, but dont understand why no compensation for the hassle or hill start. They came back and said that I knew about hill start before I collected the car! I did, but only a few weeks before, and it was me that allerted the dealer. The feature was still mis-sold. But again, they wont budge.

They said there was no compensation for the hassle cos they were replaceing my 6 month old car with 4k miles on it for a new one and not charging me!!!!!!!

I said, firstly, its not done 4k miles, more like 2300, and those are due to being told to keep driving it and the delay BMW caused in getting this far...so the miles are their fault! And also that I pointed out the fault within a week of collection, so the delay has again been their fault and they cant penalise me for that.

She then said that BMW finance would be willing to make 1 months payments and that she would ask BMW to do the same.

She rang me back and said they would, so if I accept a replacement car and 2 months of finance payments as full settlement of my complaint then they will do it. We accepted that. Also getting £200 towards detailing of the replacement car. It cost £210, but when they asked how much I had forgotten and said £200.

So in the end I did get some compensation from them. Its been an eye opener - you could buy a near £40k car and if it has faults you could end up being stuck with the car. Its not right!

10 out of 10 for persistance and a good result in the end but I do agree for what can only be regarded as a very large spend BMW's attitude is terrible and I guess if I was in your shoes that would be the last BMW I would be buying

It will be interesting to see whats around the next time I change cars.

At the moment, nothing else really interests me (apart from a Boxster..but running costs for a work daily driver probably not good).

This has been an eye opener though, so hopefully I wont be as naive in the future.

I tend to buy the car I like the look of, regardless of if its a good car. i.e. when I first moved to BMW I wanted a 3 series. I had intentions of trying an A4 as well, but never got that far.

When we got the 1'er, I probably shouldve tried a Golf...but we didn't.

If I learn anything from this it has to be next time to shop around a bit more. I might still get a BMW, but wont be as blinkered as I have been.

Brand loyalty means nothing in this day and age!

Had an email today to choose a new reg for the replacement car.

Now, as usual, the list is crap and nothing stands out as a private plate.

However, we have a dog called Gizmo, and we call him Giz, Gizzy etc. out of the list are these three:

WJ62 GYZ
WJ62 GZE
WJ62 GZY

So trying to make the best of what's there, which one says it best?

Handover was easy - we drove down only to see him driving ours out....he put fuel in (half tank). Deb had to sign some forms, then swapped keys and that was it! Deb drove it home. Raining, so havent had a good check over, but will do tomorrow (getting detailed also).
