Leak?

its dripped a couple of times, been dry in torrential rain and when washing, then had one day when there was a pool and as bad as yours in the Video but since then with putting the roof up and down a few times it hasn't leaked since and thats sitting in torrential rain, so it seems very hit and miss.
Tim.
And this is the problem. With cabs/roadsters it will always be hit and miss.
Things like operating the roof on an incline/hill or warm v cold day, or the strength of the battery, will affect the speed at which the motors operate and hence the force at which the hood shuts, which in turn means the rubber didn't quite seat the same way every time.
Making it a nightmare to predict whether one day you have a leak and the other day not.
But I know it's fustrating.

Well it rained really bad last night. Got in the car today at about 12 and it was dry! Puzzled!

Going to drive it forward onto the drive for the foreseeable future, to see if its affected by the sleigh incline. But as its happened while parked at work on the flat I think thats a red herring.

Tim - I was thinking myself about how it gets to the wind turbine place....I don't really fancy someone else driving it. Would want it going on a trailer or something.

Took it out today and had some fun. As its on 1300 miles now I can rev it more, so put it in sport and let ripp....went a bit faster than meant to, but it was fun, and sounded good. Drove back with the roof down...

Felt good to just drive it, rather than the horrible feeling of having a problem with it.

Hopefully get an update from the dealer tomorrow on what they plan to do next....but I agree, replacing the seals would be the next step in my book!

Not a red herring but one of the many variables.
My mates 993's hood needs a helping hand on a hill for the latches at the front to auto lock.
On a flat surface it auto latches perfectly.
He wants to get it adjusted but I've advised him not to as it may slam against the front windscreen on a level surface. Yes.. Different cars but same physics.

I think Rialas has a point to be honest, the Z3 has leaked and the limited time I had a Pug 207CC that leaked. I know what your saying that an expensive car shouldn't leak but I think the pure nature of the roof, being in parts etc its going to leak at some stage. If it was a case it leaking everytime it rained then a different matter but personally the odd drip or water run isn't going to bother me. Not defending BMW but you look at any manufacturer with similiar types of roofs and the forums have their leak threads. I would really push for BMW to replace the seals unless they trailor the car. I can't see a wind tunnel would make much difference than you standing there with a jetwash.

Mine hasn't run it yet, only done 300 miles

Just read this thread, really sorry your having such a nightmare with the leak, looking at your video it seems more than just the odd drip, 4 times is 2 times more than you should have had to deal with this without them involving BMW, I would suggest having strong but polite words with the Dealer Principle.

I think thats the frustration in that it doesn't leak all the time, in some ways it would better if the water poured in everytime water hit the roof lol, but if the dealer sprays water at it for half an hour and it doesn't leak they kinda think well whats the problem :?

I can understand Kevins frustration though.

On the first 2 visits (1 day each) they couldn't replicate the leak, so were working blind. I work in IT and understand the problems associated with trying to fix intermitent faults....and if you can't replicate the fault, then its nigh on impossible. They adjusted the window on the first visit, but that made no difference. I can't even remember what they did on the 2nd. (edit: on the 2nd visit they tried to replicate all the asdjustments from the drivers door onto the passenger door).

The pattern seems to be when its in the rain for several hours - it mainly happens overnight, but has happened sometimes when sat at work all day. It isn't dependant on heavy rain - just constant rain, cos one day it was just that fine misty stuff all day and it leaked, but the the other night it was quite heavy and nothing....although I didn't check it till 12 that day, so it could've evaporated.

On the 3rd visit (3 days) they said they replicated the leak by leaving a hose on it for over 4 hours. Not a pressure hose, just a garden hose with constant water. They said part of the tape holding a seal to the roof was missing, so they were replacing that. They let that dry overnight and re-tested the following day...all dry.

Except it wasnt!

So the last visit was for over a week. I think they just guessed at adjusting the seals. They said they'd had it on test for 4 days and no leak, then the day of collection it leaked!

Needless to say, not fixed.

I dont doubt that they've tried hard, but they now admit they have nothing else to try, apart from changing the seals, so they are talking to BMW.

Regarding all convertables leaking - having no prior experience of convertables, I cant comment, but looking at it from my point of view, I dont think the amount of leak as shown in my video is acceptable. Ok, one or two drops now and then, but this is too much. Also, my logic questions why the driver side is bone dry, whereas the passenger side, although not everytime, is more often than not wet. I dont think I'm being too picky - if this was to be expected then I'm sure others would've had similar experiences.

Gutted to hear your still plagued with a leak :-(
One thing I remember seeing a while back was the use of an ultrasonic transmitter that was placed inside the car then a ultrasonic receiver that was used to "sniff" out any leaks. Might be worth asking if BMW have access to such a device.

Example product - http://www.primalec.co.uk/images/stories/pdfs/ultrasonics.pdf

Hope you get it sorted real soon.

Thanks for that. I seriously doubt they have such a thing, otherwise they would've mentioned it by now - I will forward the link onto them!

Its in again this week (the 5th time!) and I've made them aware that I'm losing patience now....

Getting my car back today!!!! They've had it in since Monday 2nd July!!

They've changed a seal on the door and tested for 2 days with no leaks, so want me to drive it and see what happens.

At this stage I'm not too hopeful (cos I'v been here before), but will see how it goes....plenty of rain to test it with!

Fingers crossed, :)

Mines been leak free of late, I was expecting it to have leaked after the continous deluge today but all dry, as you say its a bit odd it leaks on the odd occasions.

Well frigg me I spoke too soon!

Went to collect car after work and they told me it had been dry for several days but had leaked this afternoon!!!!!!

They're keeping it and contacting BMW on Monday to arrange sending it to the monsoon centre.

Dealer Principle (I think thats who he was) agreed with me when I said I was under the impression the monsoon was the last hope...he said if they can't fix it then it will probably be a replacement car!!!!

Really sorry, had hoped this was the fix. :(

Are you being leant a car whilst all this is going on? Seems the least BMW could do.

Yeah, I've got a 116i as a loan car. Have had a Mini Clubman, a 118d with advertising stickers all over it, the salesman's 328i (with loads of toys) and had the Orange 116d (with no toys) for the past 2 weeks. A loan car hasn't been an issue, and whilst the 1'er is ok, I wish I had something tastier!!!!

So on Monday they referred it to BMW to send it to the Monsoon centre. I rang yesterday and they were still awaiting details.

Today I went in for an update and they haven't had a reply yet so chased it again and might escalate it higher.

They said my loan 116d is booked to me till mid August!!!!! but that they will see if BMW can lend me a Z4.

Then they said the Monsoon centre is in Germany. See my other thread about that!

So no further forward and getting more frustrated!

update....

The last update was during the cars 5th visit. In total, they had it for 3 weeks during that visit, bringing the total days in the dealer to 39!!!!

The monsoon centre thing never happened....at the end of the week they were trying to arrange for that, BMW told them to replace more seals!

At this point we decided we had had enough and have now rejected the car with a letter to BMW Finance, BMW Customer Services and the dealer principle. The rejection + compensation for hill start + compensation for hassle is still in progress, so back to the car...

The replacement seals were on back order from BMW, so last Thursday they gave me my car back as they said they needed the 1'er loan car (even though it was booked to me till mid august!).

Apparently now the seals are in, so I've booked it back in for next week...for its 6th visit!

So, basically, my car has been in for 5 seperate visits, for a total of 39 days and they still haven't actually diagnosed the cause of the leak. They stronly suspect it is faulty seals, but they wont know this until they "try" the new seals next week.

If this fixes the car, we are stil rejecting it, cos we dont think it is acceptable the problems we have had, and we have no confidence in the car and will be always "waiting" for it to leak again...just lost confidence in this car.

So, see what next week brings. Other people have had their cars swapped out for "lesser" issues, so considering we've also got the hill start issue and this major cock up with the leak, I dont see why we shouldn't also. This is a near £40k brand new BMW after all, it shouldnt need multiple trips to fix a problem that they basically dont know what the issue is.

So sorry to hear the saga continues :(
It is so frustrating to hear they don't appear to identify the cause of the leak, can only imagine what you have been going through.
Will you be replacing with another Z4 or going for another model / marque?

Still want a Z4. The only other car I fancy at the moment is a Boxster, and don't think I could afford to run one (remember I use this for work, and a Z4 isn't really practical!).

Spoke to the dealer principle tonight....BMW sent him some forms to complete last Wednesday, but he still hasn't done them! He assured me they could be returned by Friday......

He repeated to me that if BMW replace the car, it will be like-for-like.....he's happy for me to claim a replacement car and compensation for the hassle...cos that apparently comes from BMW, but he keeps trying to brush the hill start issue under the carpet, cos that is the dealers fault (apparently). So cos I asked for an auto upgrade due to hill start, he realises that will cost him, so is trying to put it down. Unfortunately for him, I will keep fighting for it!

I reckon he's trying to delay it, in the hope these seals fix it, then I think they will go cold on me and say the car is fixed so bugger off.

Well...the seals haven't been fitted yet (thats next week) and theres no guarantee they will actually work!

That hill start thing being dealers fault would certainly explain the wildly different settlements people have received...
