In case anyone bothers with keeping the satnav map up to date, the latest version (2021.4) is available. Just log in to the connected drive website to download.

Maybe your car already come with the latest map. You can check before update. The map is quite large to download and you need a larger usb stick to transfer to the car.

Yeah. I still needed it. Had to dig up the 64gb usb stick.
50 minute download. I’ll plug it into the car tomorrow at some point.

Just to say that if you don’t want to wait in the car while updating or updating while driving the car, what you can do is triple press the engine start button without your foot on the brake. Doing this will put your car into diagnostic mode which can stop the system from shutting down. Once in the diagnostic mode, don’t open or close the door or the car will exit the mode and shut down the system before the update is finished.

How the hell do you know this stuff???!?!?!?

Ok so how do I get out of the car if opening a door ends it?

FYI. From last experience of you drive around and have to stop, it does carry on when you start again.

 I was thinking the same thing, I’ve not worked out how to use bloody car play yet and then read things like this

My solution to the door open/close thing was do it on the drive on a dry day and windows down and reach in to press the stop/start button

My way of doing this is put the window down, get out, close the door, reach the button from outside, then close the window by reaching the window button again from outside.

I know it can continue after the system shut down. It’s just a habit to let it finish in one go. Plus, I have two cars to update. Technically, any interrupt may lead to data corruption although a well designed software can minimise the chance and can recover from that.

About the how part, it’s just when I tried other stuffs on the car and found this info online. :tumbleweed:

Ah, same solution here.

For the CarPlay, if you’ve had it connected, then just treat it as your iPhone by using the touchscreen. Or, use the “Hey Siri” thing. Siri is much smarter than “Hey BMW”. Only thing is you need to speak to the A-pillar where the mic is located at.

So true! Massive appreciation for your contributions.

My navigation is ahead of time. In October, it sent me on a road which doesn't exist yet. No sign of any building work yet, but it was already on a map. Then, it was trying to redirect me back to this road, so had a bit of fun.

Now have to check Connected Drive website you mention and see how to download a file. Thanks for a tip about diagnostic mode. I can leave car with open windows in the garage.

SO I downloaded this, went to the car and checked the mapping. It's already installed! :D Must have done it over the air already. I did see a notification the other week that said mapping updated but didn't pay attention to what it had done. Ah well.

So this can be done without a computer to usb download??

Asking because I don’t have access to a laptop at the moment but couldn’t see anything on the app about being able to do it remotely.

If it can I’ll need to check there’s 30GB+ free on my phone

I’m sure the small map updates can be done from within the car somehow, but I thought major ones were usb only.

Just started this diagnostic thing. It worked! Even tells you it’s gone into that mode. Awesome.

The map update is different than the RSU. It does not require your phone to download the map first. Also, based on what I know and experienced so far, I don't think the live map update will update the base map. It will just apply some patches to the base map. This USB map update will update the entire base map. Maybe I'm wrong though.

[ref]Z4monster[/ref], would you mind share a picture of the map version which can be found in MAP -> Settings -> Update? Also, have you visit dealer recently? If the live map update can indeed update the entire base map version and it's just a matter of time, then I don't need to bother with the USB map update in the future.

About your previous question of how to get out of the car, another way is to get into the passenger seat then activate the diagnostic mode. As it just needs the key in the car then press the button three times, it doesn't really matter which seat you are on. The diagnostic mode is sensitive to the driver side door but not passenger side door.
