Know your G29

As an aside, I’ve noticed two quirks, sometimes the left hand mirror drops when parking sometimes it doesn’t.
sars, the left-hand mirror will turn down if the Mirror Control Switch (left/right slider) is set to adjust the right-hand mirror. If you keep the switch to the left (for adjusting the left-hand mirror) the mirror will not turn down.

[ref]B21[/ref], no I use one fob, and for iDrive 7 you can personalise the key, so when I enter the car, it says hello Sarah
[ref]BeeEmm[/ref], I’m pretty sure it is set on right hand at the moment, but didn’t drop when I reversed into a space at work this morning, but I shall check later

In translation, is that there is a logic to the system, we just haven’t figured it out yet.

Yep. There are some logic behind how the system works and we are just reverse engineering the logic.
About the idrive shut off, that's quite simple:
1. car parked
2. press engine start/stop button once and the idrive screen should show Goodbye sars (or change sars to your profile name) at the top of the screen, assuming there is no active phone call
3. With a few second gap since last step for the car to be ready to identify next condition which is:
If passenger seat belt hasn't been fasten since the beginning of current trip, then open driver door will shut down the idrive.
If passenger seat belt has been used or is still being used, then open both driver and passenger doors will shut down the idrive.

This procedure will give you 90+% of idrive shut off. For the remaining 10%, maybe it's because you pressed other button between 2. and 3. :headbang: :headbang:

As I say there’s probably logic there to explain it, I’m just to blonde to figure it out :poke:

I'm not so sure as I think that there is a poltergeist lurking somewhere in the software.

Mine is at the dealer's today to have the major software update done and I asked them to look at the comfort access as the door has stopped unlocking when I approach. I was told that the reason was that I hadn't ticked the box in the settings which was very odd as it worked fine, then I went on holiday for a week and when I returned it had stopped working so there seems to be a gremlin at work somewhere

Lots and lots of code to debug probably, that’s the main issue with software, the more it does the more code there is and then there’s all the if/then logic to contend with too.

I don’t think the handbook / manuals are very instructive. I think they assume a good level of knowledge before you start.

I would like to see a “How do I” (idiots guide) type of version available even if it was an e version!

To be fair, I think it's opposite. They are trying too hard to explain a simple control logic (as when the idrive should shut down) in a very user-friendly way assuming the user has no knowledge at all. I am writing some user-facing docs and being driven mad by our tech publisher peoples. :headbang: :headbang:

About the "How do I" bit, BMW actually publish some videos on youtube about how to use some headline features. I personally find they are like "how to start" instead of "what to do when it's not the same as shown in the video" kind of video.

[ref]Ian J[/ref], did you not get the option of the remote software upgrade?

That’s why I started this topic :D

anyway, have you ordered it yet, or are you going to wait until all the kit is back on

I got cold feet!
The price offered for my car took a dive ( as expected at this time of the year) and reading the text the on / off delivery saga.

I was offered a build slot for a wk49 delivery but it was a 600 mile round trip in lousy weather or £1200 for delivery

Part of buying a new car is the experience and it just wasn’t working for me. I didn’t feel in charge of the situation.

I will wait and see what the availability situation is in the Springtime - at my age I don’t want to be without a fun car when the weather improves and I’m able to book the Germany trips! I’m not exactly slumming it in my current car and at 14k miles it’s not worn out !

Never say never

Yes I did update the software remotely but I think that this was a pretty major software upgrade as it took several hours at Sytners to complete

The upgrade didn't affect the switching off of the awful artificial exhaust note or the switching off of the stop start facility but it did affect some of my personalisations which I assume have been changed to factory default and which is a real pain as it took me ages to work out how to customise it to the way that I want.

I had both the current and average mpg in the middle of the speedo dial but can't remember how I did it and now they have gone. Grrr

Is that not changed by pressing in the indicator stalk?

[ref]Ian J[/ref], oh I know that one, go to the main menu, car settings and it’s in there I think and you can select total average, journey average or individual. The right stalk button cycles between navigation/media/power&torque/g meter/current&avg mpg/drive mode

Thanks BeeEmm and sars as that's saved me hours of ploughing through the handbook

Wouldn't it be nice if BMW could make a modular handbook which only contained information for the country that you are in and for the items fitted to your car as it would be much easier to read for oldies like me

There is a "BMW DRIVER'S GUIDE" app (yes, another app) that shows the manual based on your vin. There are some detailed explain, quick search, animations and how to videos in the app. You can also use your phone's camera to do some smart scan and search.

Thanks for that. I hadn't bothered to look at that as I assumed it was just as convoluted as the printed manual

That app is quite handy than the paper manual especially when you click the magnifier search button at botton right (this is the case for iphone app) and either do smart scan or the 360 view. :driving: :driving:

When you first start the car, below the temperature gauge it says COLD in text. Once your car has warmed up a little, the lettering disappears and you just have the temp gauge.
I'm not sure what that signifies beyond the engine temp is really cold and you probably shouldn't give it the full beans :-)
