just picked up a new camera!!

wow breaker!!! stu..... you lot are seriously good at this stuff!!! i was going to post my attempts but ive decided to go back to the drawing board!!! lol.....

out of interest where are you guys uploading these pics to as im finding my photobucket kills the details of the shots, do i need to pay for an account to be able to post full resolution pics up???

some of the pics posted on this thread are breath taking!!! amazing stuff!!
 
The ones I posted are on Flickr. I've not noticed anything with photo bucket when I've used them though. If you're resizing or converting from raw to jpg it might be a loss during conversion, especially resizing unless you use a decent program

Don't be shy about posting. Nobody will rip you apart. Most keen amateurs and friendly pro's will provide constructive feedback. Just look at the info people share in other photo threads

Saying that someone will be along shortly with the "yooooooouuuur sh1t ahhhh!" comment :)

after what you two have just posted up ill defo go back to the drawing board for sure...... the nikon is a beautiful cam though, im really enjoying messing around with it, within the next couple of days ill try and have something decent for you, i am trying to get some cool shots of my car with a nice backdrop..... im just playing with the settings and its proving alittle more difficult that first thought but im getting their!!
 
Try that exercise I suggested, then go from there. If you close the lens to a high f number and the shutter speed drops too low then increase the ISO setting until it comes back to a sensible speed. A sensible speed is the focal length of the lens. So on a 55mm lens setting, dont drop below 1/60th of a second unless on a tripod. One thing about nikons is that they are superb in low light. Much better than my canon

On the dps site, look for the lesson on the relationship between shutter speed, lens opening and iso speed. You'll crack that soon enough. Rule of thirds has already been mentioned for composition. As already said, get it right in the camera and you'll need to do very little in photoshop etc. Those 3 pics are straight out of the camera, just cropped to suit and converted from raw to jpg. No other tweaks used.

As soon as you can, shoot raw not jpg. You can do so much more with what comes out of the camera raw.

Great thread that's full of useful info.
I recall when I helped a family member with a wedding shoot, he suggested that when shooting in bright daylight conditions of people it's a good idea to use a flash to soften the shadows. Might be useful when taking shots of your lad.

Just to prove you don't need a big bucks camera to get interesting photos, I took this pic with my iPhone 4s last evening while sitting in my garden. I used my sunglasses as a filter! :P

You'll need jpg to upload to a sharing site, but for editing. RAW files hold a lot more detail but they can be huge files!!

The general concensus is yes, but my advice would be do the switch to shooting raw when you're happy with 80% of what's coming out of the camera. Raw is a file that is exactly what hit the sensor, jpg is the camera compressing the image and applying a certain amount of correction. If you have a 12megapixel camera, you'll get a 12mb-ish raw file as opposed to the jpg that will be a lot smaller. Raw files are also camera specific and you wouldn't be able to upload them as they are to a website. Your camera probably came with conversion software but I would recommend photoshop elements that will let you do most things you'll want to do

great pic .hi i had a red z3.remember me saying to you the one time that i wanted a zed 4 well like yourself work hard and you get what ya want got an m roadster last november .what a hand full let alone supercharged etc .hows the little lad and are you ok after your ordeal .hope to see you down the track .

Well I've looked through this thread about great photography and so far I haven't seen any really. Here is one I quickly snapped on my iphone to give you guys some tips. I professionally took this one on my iphone just before me and the ex went out clubbing a few months back. I made it a bit fuzzy and not framed great but you can see how my photographer's eye picked out the best points of it straightaway.

Keep at it though guys, I don't want to discourage you, you will get there, it just comes with practise... :thumbsup:
