Just had a nose in here because I am wavering over adding photography to my hobbies, could be deadly combined with the Z ... spotted some argy bargy, read back through, went from horrified to confused and back again... And was very happy to finally read this post

Thanks mate, ok so I've had alittle more time with this camera now and I'm pretty convinced guide mode is utter turd.... Infact it has no purpose from what I can see??

Mine seem well.... Nothing special. Auto mode is weak and only the odd photo looks great.

Nope, just buy photoshop le and/or Lightroom 4. Macs are great but it's the software you're running and Adobe creates for Windows and Mac. Save the £2k and buy a decent camera and lens

Can you point to a pic you really like? Maybe one of the pic of the moth shots?

If you mean the subject is clear and in focus with a blurry background, that's depth of field and done by opening up the lens. The smaller the f number you shoot at, the narrower the depth of field, but you have to take into account focal length of the lens, distance to subject etc etc.

Some of the other shots are retouched in photoshop or similar to selectively highlight, add halo effects, desaturate colours etc. Hard to tell what you're looking for from your description. "fake looking" suggests HDR but that will get you a bunch of flack, it's a real love it or hate it thing.

Take a look at that website I pointed you at. One piece of advise, don't try and run before you can walk. Learn the basics of the camera and composition and it will all come good.

Second piece of advice, have fun!

hi shortfuse, im guessing your from curborough??? hello to who-ever you are, i havent been much at all this year but will REALLy be trying hard from next week onwards, life with the little one and recents events has made things difficult, thanks again for the comment above, im guessing if your a SDCC member you will know me and what i do or dont own ;-) thanks again, its really no worries really, i enjoy the hate, keeps me working hard Have you seen my z4 this year??? its got some really cool new stuff on their and were currently looking into a sequential drexler gearbox!! VERY cool, complete bolt on unit.......

Your camera can most definitely get that kind of shot. Most of the "wow" in that shot is that it's well composed and, I suspect, he's used an ND grad filter (think vari tint sunglasses) on a good lens as the sky is perceptably darker at the top. It's probably also been tweaked in Photoshop.

Here's a practice for you. Set the camera to A or Av mode (not sure how it shows on a Nikon, I shoot Canon), put it on the tripod and set it up so you have a similar view of your car from the rear qtr. If you want to go find nice scenary, all good. Focus on the rear light cluster (or whatever you want to be the focal point) and set the lens wide open to f/2.8, f/4.0, whatever is the widest your lens will go. Then take a pic, close the lens one setting and take another and keep doing this until you hit the largest number your lens will offer (f/22 maybe) Then load all the pics into the computer and take a look at the effect. What you should see is more and more of the background coming into focus as you close the lens. With the lens wide open you should get an effect similar to the pics below, as you close the lens down towards f/22 more will come into focus. The closer you are to the car when you take the shots, the more pronounced the "blur" effect. Try moving away and repeating to see what I mean.

Just happy to share what I've picked up on my journey. Those pics were from when i was teaching myself depth of field.

There is a ton of info out there, you just need to find it. The more you get right in the camera, the better you'll be as a photographer. Photoshop should really only be for finishing touches or art you can't do in the camera. All the greats never used a pc or mac

Not to long ago I gave my opinion on the subject which I have pasted in below...

Here is my opinion on the subject. Please feel free to disagree. First it is very difficult to prove if an image has been photoshopped. Before digital photography those individuals that were more experienced often developed and printed there own photos. Once the negative was developed they could use their skill to improved the image by a variety of means in the darkroom. Including the choice of paper, use of filters in printing, dodging, burning, lens or easel tilt just to mention a few basic methods. Then there was retouching which was done directly on the negative or the finished print. In effect what they were doing was “photoshopping”. I can't recall that any of these techniques were forbidden when entering a photo into a contest. Today with digital photography “photoshopping” IMO is nothing more that what was once done in the darkroom. Photoshopping is a necessary skill for the advanced amateur today as much as a darkroom was for the advanced amateur 20 or 30 years ago.

Have a D90 myself. Would recommend using A mode as the next step up from full automatic. This allows you to alter the aperture (f value) manually and the camera will select the best shutter speed for your ISO setting and lighting.

E.g. Low f number when you are taking portraits (blurred background to keep focus on subject) = fast shutter and high f number = slow shutter (use your tripod) for landscapes when you want the entire scene in focus.

Get the "dummies" guide or similar for your camera then just experiment best way to learn IMO.

It really isn't as hard as you think. Being in the digital era just stick in full manual and play with one setting at a time and look at the results. Quick and dirty way of learning as you have a delete button :wink:

Did think that. Cracking pics by the way. Currently stuck with the kit lens 18-105mm nikkor which is not a bad all-rounder but will need to start investing in a new lense or two.

Thanks. I saved up and bought decent glass when I bought the camera. They were taken with my first "pro" lens which I opted for instead of the kit lens. This Photography lark is more expensive than running a Zed! Canon EOS 5D mkiii beckons... :wub:

Get something like photoshop Elements and have a play. Rarely are photos like this ever straight from the camera. :wink:
