Guess that's why it's cheap then.
But of course, although that stays on its record, there's nothing to say the owner didn't take it back and have it properly and safely repaired himself.
Insurance company would have looked at the cost, which would include brand new parts and labour costs.

So it could be a good cheap buy for someone, assuming they did their due diligence on the repair history etc, and didn't ever want to sell it on easily. :roll:

I'm always wary of adverts/people who don't tell it like it is upfront. Sometimes there is a valid reason, but often it is because there is something they hope you will miss and they will profit from. :thumbsdown:
 
The words ‘structurally damaged’ don’t fill me with joy..

The temptation must be for anyone buying an insurance right off must be to cut corners or at best be economical if they are buying to resell it..

If it was a main dealer selling it..maybe OK..with a back room possible hacker wearing my safety orientated hat I would say ‘what could possibly go wrong’ :thumbsdown:
 
Cat S is more than a dented panel or scuff marks its chassis or crumple zone. Think I'd want a professional (qualified person) repair for that. I've bought a repaired old Cat C car as a runaround. No problem with insurance but it had a NOVA cert and new MOT and I valued it cheap (just as it cost me) so if I bent it I was not looking to replace it with a 'mint' one.

Seven years later and its still going strong as the 'hack' doing all the dirty work. Caution though Cat S is not a direct replacement for Cat C - it has had structural damage.
 
Cat S is supposed to mean there is structural damage, but the way insurance claims are handled these days I wouldn't put too much faith in them knowing the difference!

My nephew had a disagreement with a Tesco van a couple of years ago and Admiral decided his E46 was a Cat S based on a couple of photos from his phone - they never even sent anyone to look at it and didn't ask him to take it to any bodyshop!

There was no structural damage whatsoever so with a new wing and arch liner and a 2nd hand bonnet from Ebay he got it fixed for less than they paid him with enough left to cover a new wing for the other side (it was crusty) and a respray of the whole front end to get rid of stone chips!

But the newer the car the more concerned I would be as it takes more damage to make repairs potentially uneconomic - ideally you want to see good photos of the damage, unless the car is silly cheap and you don't plan to be selling it in the foreseeable future.

I knew it was a CAT S before buying, but I hadn't seen this thread. CAT S was for a side swipe which also tore part of front bumper away. Damage was basically bodywork.

I've probably spent £500-£100 on it but nothing that 'had to be done' more what I 'wanted to do' to it (improve paint job, few aesthetic changes inside, and 2 new hall sensors in the boot) and it's a dream. The engine is an absolute beauty and has had 6 or 7 clear MOT's in as many years bar the last which was my fault (new shocks).

All in all a (somewhat lucky) bargain at £4500 which is what I paid him - the wheels needed a bit of refurbing.
