As I posted earlier. The free option on SKY is called 'free to view' and as long as SKY permit you accessing their 'free' channels using your existing viewing card then no problem. When I cancelled my SKY subscription 8-9 years ago I was told that when I needed to renew my viewing card there would be a charge £20-30 IIRC.
Freesat is a joint venture between BBC and ITV and was set up 8 years ago.
