Whilst the Apple TV is good, for a slightly higher initial outlay you could have a computer running XBMC.

Couple it with a few plugins and you'll have more content at your disposal than you have time to watch. (Of course this is on the assumption you have an decent broadband connection)

Can you recommend a few plugins Neil? I've been using Plex on my Mac Mini as a media centre for a couple of years now, but it's not got as many usable plug-ins as I'd hoped. How do watch other channels via XBMC?

Icefilms and sports devil gets me through everything I want along with tvcatchup for live streaming of the main channels (quality isn't that great, but then again I don't watch much broadcast tv)

Why pay out more to buy a pc? You can get all the plugins you would ever need in the Apple tv 2.

For 3 of the 4 xbmc machines, they're old computers. Only one was a purpose bought pc (an Intel NUC) which can be had cheaper new than an atv2 is used.

udate...

it went off today :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

will i miss it??? yes....probably more than i care to admit,

will i miss putting 864 bills into the murdoch pension fund yearly... NO..... sky is simply not worth it, even down to the last day no-one called to try and make an offer which i would have probably accepted.

I'm going to use the money saved to put in an account for my son.

If they do as they are doing with me (cancelled in March 2014) then they will pester you and make various offers as the weeks go by. Currently they are offering me any package, including Sports & Films, at 50% discount for 12 months.

Tempted, but I won't be signing up tho' as I'm getting by with a Humax 1Tb Freesat box and NetFlix.

I cancelled it and got the Humax HD box. Lasted a month without sky. Do I miss it?... Not a chance. Certainly don't miss giving them £80 a month.

Carol - Would that be something like Apple TV 2 with XBMC / FRODO / NAVI X & Nito? [ That I'm about to get :) ]

apple tv 2 is limited to 720p output

I set up an ATV2 with xbmc etc on for my brother, keeps him happy.
for me I need higher quality stuff so I have 7tb of storage and sky fibre

apple tv 1 with a broadcom crystal hd puts out 1080 (on openelec)

or an intel nuc doing everything you could want.

B if you have a smart tv you can usually hook up a hard drive and record/pause live tv on that.
