I've gone and done it... cancelled SKY!!

There's no doubt Sky's a rip off but if like me you want to watch the ashes / six nations / F1 then they have the monopoly I couldn't care less about football and the premier league all a load of pansies.but it seems I have to pay for not watching, just to see what I want. If only as it should be the national sports events were on terrestrial TV .

Well after the sky go me down yesterday with the football i am tempted to cancel mine now aswell and go back to torrents.

whats apple TV???

You need an AppleTV 2. Not a 3.

Like this one on the bay...

There's a few of them about.

I have sky but get a raspberry pi and mashup tv which gets you free tv including sky channels and F1!!!!

I have to have it for the F1 and The Wire (what a show - I never watched it first time round, now totally hooked!)

Most of the rest I agree is total crap and a complete rip off. Could do with having 70% less channels but making the output better quality (shows like boardwalk empire)

I wish I could try Virgin but not in my street still :(

Now that the super Foxes are in the Premiership I have even more reason to watch my Sky. I watch it a lot but then I watch a lot of sport - F1/GP2, football, cricket, golf, NFL etc. I also watch Sky News a lot too.

I'd Rather give the money to the Chancellor & Shell. :driving:

Besides I'm not sure if you can get Sky on our beaches and the box thing would probably not work so well with 5 tons of surf pounding down on it. :D

Whilst the Apple TV is good, for a slightly higher initial outlay you could have a computer running XBMC.

Couple it with a few plugins and you'll have more content at your disposal than you have time to watch. (Of course this is on the assumption you have an decent broadband connection)

I'm having the same issue with sky.

81 quid a month currently and I only need it to watch f1, discovery and sky Atlantic.

I ditched Sky years ago when I realised what I was paying and mainly watching free channels anyway.

Freesat and freesat from Sky are not the same thing, confusing I know.

I have a variety of Freesat and Freeview boxes around the house, does what I want and for nothing.

Can you recommend a few plugins Neil? I've been using Plex on my Mac Mini as a media centre for a couple of years now, but it's not got as many usable plug-ins as I'd hoped. How do watch other channels via XBMC?

Byron - feel your pain mate. I've been looking recently at updating from Freeview to something with more options but Sky/VIrgin just want to fleece me for what I know I'll only use a little. Youview or Talk Talk seem like a good options. Or BT when they get fibre broadband in my area at the end of this year (I REALLY miss my weekend MotoGP!).

As I posted earlier. The free option on SKY is called 'free to view' and as long as SKY permit you accessing their 'free' channels using your existing viewing card then no problem. When I cancelled my SKY subscription 8-9 years ago I was told that when I needed to renew my viewing card there would be a charge £20-30 IIRC.

Freesat is a joint venture between BBC and ITV and was set up 8 years ago.

I pay a small mortgage to Sky to find my wife scanning the channels every night for about 20 mins :headbang:
She wont let me cancel it!

I'd get rid of the TV as well as the Sky if I had my way, but the wife definitely wouldn't sign that one off.

Question, so it looks like Sky will keep working as a Free View type setup once the contract is cancelled. But will the ability to Sky+ still work?

Initially yes, but they will at some stage block your existing card and force you to have a new viewing card which currently costs £25 to enable you to continue to receive their 'free' channels.

We pay over £80 but actually use it quite a lot. Son loves the kids movies, which saves us from buying all the Disney DVDs, husband likes big crabs, trucks driving on ice roads, nazis (i.e. the Discovery channel) and the sport. I like the documentary channels and the odd movie. Husband is also away a lot so makes full use of Sky Go. We tried cancelling, but it lasted half an hour.....
