Is there a great difference between the 2.5 and the 3litre

I tried both before buying, there isn't THAT much difference in the pre-facelift 2.5 or 3.0, they both shift! I went with a 2.5 with lower miles, more kit and better history for my budget.

ah, you'll want an ///M or Alpina if you want to remove skin from puddings :P

Deffo an Alpina. Enough torque for anyone and really good fuel economy compared to an ///M :)

Plus a body kit to die for...

and 19" dynamic wheels, and interior, and exhaust note and, and, and........

Mark, get yourself on the exclusive roadster club list Adamski is running. I'm all alone there as an Alpina owner!

The difference is more than just about power. The 3.0 comes with 6 gears, auto lights and wipers, electric seats, silver inner headlights and silver grill.

They also sit lower on M-sport suspension if I remember correctly?

You can get these on 2.0 + M Seats, Wheel & lower stiffer suspenshion
which is alot lighter and just as much fun to drive.

I would say get the best all round package you can find that fits your budget
dont just opt for the biggest engine if its not the best example you have found

As another poster mentioned, there's no absolute best and it will depend on your approach to driving.

If you're a track aficionado I'm sure the 3.0 is the way to go, but for "normal" road and freeway driving I've never felt let down by my 2.5i, and it has never given me the impression that it was at the limits of its performance capabilities. Maybe I'm just a bit of an old lady behind the wheel (apologies to old ladies everywhere), but the car has always had the reserve to push a bit harder when needed, so why would I need a bigger engine?

Of course if bragging rights are important (as in "mine's bigger than yours"), then the 3.0 it must be!

Whatever. Enjoy your Zed!!

Couldn't agree more, exactly the point I was trying to make earlier.

Not in OPs budget, which is what this thread should be about.

To many people are talking about facelift cars which will only confuse the the OP who has £6000 to spend.

For MPG/power ratio there is no choice but the 3.0l a lot of people have seen 40+ and you get significant power gains. Never understood the want for the 2.5l.

Im 23 have a Z4Mc I get 26mpg average and the insurance is £1060. You can get Z4M roadsters for £12k now but the tax is significantly more the 3.0l is a good compromise. But it has to be a coupe, much more exclusive much better looking IMHO. But the open top motoring is also very appealing. Just a coupe guy, but would buy the mrs a roadster then have the best of both worlds

My 2003 2.5 SMG has all those (apart from ugly silver grille and silver jappo headlights) :fuelfire: plus satnav, park assist, heated seats, dream red Oregon leather, Carver stereo, bluetooth, cup holders, luggage nets, interior mood lighting, cruise control', yawn, yawn, must I go on... oh, and less than 20K miles.

Size is not everything, it depends on what you want, but IMHO go for a car that's been looked after with high spec and low miles, rather than a poverty spec, just because it has a bigger engine. My advice is keep looking, you just might get your cake and eat it the way prices are going, unfortunately for most of us current owners, state of the economy, it seems ! :(

Imo if you just commute in busy traffic then even the 2.2 will be sufficient.

But its all down the personal preference... If you got a 2.5 would you regret not getting a 3.0 in 6months time? If so get a 3.0 now!

No, please go on. I'm sure we'd love to hear how great your car is some more (yawn)

Yours is a clearly a well specced by the original buyer 2.5, but the things I mentioned are not standard on the 2.5 and are on the 3.0. The OP wanted advice on the difference between the 2.5 and the 3.0.....not your 2.5 and the 3.0

I gotta say gizmos and engine size are totally irrelevant to me.

What really matters is the pose, roof down cruising, twirly driving on interesting roads, having a pretty car.

2.0 2.2 2.5 3.0 3.2 pfft!

Colour, wheels, interior, the rest is testosterone.

You forgot the 3.4 in there........... :D

3.4 alpina? yes I would have one of them too as long as the colour was right.

I have nothing against bhp except the mpg and although the differentials aren't really enough to avoid the larger engines averaging 36.7 mpg is free money from my point of view. Saving two seconds to sixty isn't worth worrying about. The Mrs has the 2.0 and if we can't overtake the car in front they are already going pdq.

My alpina gets 32 mpg, mostly local country road driving, plus a 0-60 to cause retinal detatchment.... but I don't mind paying the extra in fuel to get the grin factor every day.

+1 I'm lucky enough to have the Alpina as a weekend toy. Current hooning plus a lot of short trips has it at 29.something but it's been as high as 36 average.

32 is impressive. I was expecting more like 25 for the alpina.

theoretically it would cost me a couple of quid a week to use a larger engine but . . .
I could get a pint for that. :)
