Is it just me. . . . . . ?

Had a couple of lovely days out on recces for further Newcastle runs with Steph but I can't be the only one that finds we end up annoying folk on the road?

I've resigned myself to the fact that we can't go out in the Zed without spooking or upsetting some folk when overtaking - it's probably a function of the Zed's performance and their lack of experience of how much room is needed and how capable the Zed is?

We do an overtake and a car will honk or flash it's lights behind us. We'll take an opportunity with plenty of safety and room and oncoming vehicles will flash. It's not every manoeuvre but it seems we can't go out a day without this happening at least once.

Now - I enjoy my driving and make the most of opportunities but I am IAMs trained, use their overtaking four point approach and prefer to enjoy myself within legal speeds on the road as I want to keep my licence, so we're not looking at hooligan vehicle use, more spirited enjoyment.

There's no doubt that in some cases a little jealousy might be a factor as we always have the roof down and I'm always in sunglasses (contact lens wearer) and my wife has blonde hair and sometimes I can see it's a two fingered approach but others are so easily spooked by the sound of the Zed in a low gear and despite lying back before an overtake (for better viewing and not to crowd them) some still flash and honk as we pull in after an overtake. . . . . .

It'll only occur the once but it's something I've come to expect on a run out. Surely it can't always be my driving :? Anyone else?

:driving:

Yep - no end of plonkers on the road who seem to have got their licences from a jamboree bag.

Ignore them or give them a polite wave.

There are always cocks on the road.... and not all of them drive BMWs...

Can't say ive experienced it at all in this Z or previous weekenders & in the last 1000 or so miles i passed a good number of cars with the roof down , shades & a blonde wife :P
What grates my cheese when i'm romping on is a car that is clearly aware i would like to pass yet continues at a pace annoyingly under legal
Whenever i'm cracking on at a happy pace & someone gets up behind me ( doesn't happen often i admit  ) i simply indicate & pull over , no hassle :?
In France they have a method that works without annoying anyone , if a car approaches from behind & their intent is to pass they indicate such & car in front pulls over or slows down  simple courtesy

It's not you at all Paul, you know what level I was trained to drive as well, but for all the skill, road craft, planning etc, it does wind people up.

Most people only ever pass the standard driving test, & that's it. They will see someone like us perform a perfectly safe overtake and judge it as poor driving, which often results in gestures or a flash of headlights.

Much of it ignorance, & yes, some of it is Jealousy.

I will leave you with this true tale...

I once received a complaint regarding my manner of driving. The author of the letter was annoyed as they had witnessed me perform a three lane entry to the M62 motorway. I was on my way to a shooting in Bradford. It was the murder of Policewomen - Sharon Breshenevsky.

I never see anything like this. Maybe I just don't notice - or maybe I'm near the bottom of the bellend scale in London? :?

This weekend, for example - about 400 miles covered between London and Devon, with lots of top-down overtakes on short dual carriageway sections of the A303 and the odd wiggle off a roundabout. No issues or bad vibes at all, despite the roads being quite busy.

It's one of the things I was worried about when buying a Z4, but just hasn't happened. Perhaps 3-4 unreasonable reactions from van drivers / angry dads in over 2 years of ownership, and probably about the same number when I've actually done something a bit silly.

The only thing I have experienced is that because I'm driving a sports car think I want a race a Peugeot or something similar. I just let them get on with righting themselves off, I'm not interested

I've had this once or twice, but not often, and mostly from oncoming vehicles. The person I am overtaking quickly realises I have more than enough power to get past, but even people a quarter mile away coming towards me don't necessarily realise I'm not being pedestrian about the manoeuvre and get all antsy. I know it's not dangerous so I don't worry about them. Though I do worry sometimes that the overtaken car might speed up whilst I'm in the other lane, because there are idiots around... That might cause some issues.

Oh I've had a few that I'm certain resented the BMW (posh car) and the roof down - the number plate probably doesn't help either (not deliberate just the plate from our MX5 that Steph particularly cared about).

I like the idea of the French etiquette  I have had far more folk pull over and let us through then be alarmed or resentful

I agree and just wanted to hear if others had the same experience. I think there is room to recognise other's perception, even if we don't think it's valid - to them it looks like irresponsible driving when in fact it is far from it but sometimes it can amaze me.

I'm no perfect driver and it'll happen only once out of many manoeuvres and overtakes, so important to keep it in perspective.

These are the same 'with it' people that either leave their fog lights on weeks after fog has disappeared, put fog lights on when it rains, don't turn them off when you catch them up and indeed switch them on when you approach them. They also leave their main beam on after a perfectly safe and within speed limit overtake after hanging back so as not to intimidate them. Bless 'em. :x

I clearly made a woman jump the other day whilst overtaking in the Porsche - I'd been behind her for a while and as it's quite a bright car and always has running lights on I would have expected that she would have known I was there.

No rude gestures, but just concern on my part of her total lack of awareness

Generally though I haven't found a problem - I'll report back in a couple of weeks as to how they take to the Evora :x

Not in a sports car so much (M nor 911), but do get it in the X5 which has similar performance as your Z so can nip by rather quickly which is not always appreciated.

Whenever I've had flashing or general "gestures" from people I have overtaken I honestly believe the reason these plonkers are reacting is because they were not aware I was there and are woken up by me !

We occasionally get this on Sunday Morning Hoons.

I dont think its being passed that annoys people. Its the realisation that theres 3 or 4 Zeds together and they think we are racing. Then the jealousy probably kicks in as a few people have cars they would like.

Its definitely worse if theres more than one Zed.

I think these are the same people that drive at a constant 40mph everywhere irrespective of how the speed limit changes, up or down...

I have also experienced similar and glad to say not that often luckily. I tend to try and ignore them and just carry on enjoying my drive

It's not just me then

I'm fairly certain it's folk unaware to be honest - unaware of the Zed behind them or unaware of it's performance potential.

Thankfully not very often

It's just stereotypes. 2 seat sports car, passing at speed, making a lot of noise = hooligan.

Personally I just embrace the prejudice :D
