I really like Christmas time..the lights, decorations, carols, good mood, company of good friends, festive food and drink and the cheesy music. I prefer the lead up to it than the actual day itself as its just me and my parents at home and it's a bit quiet. Being a doctor I've often worked on Christmas Day in the past and have really enjoyed the atmosphere in the hospital.

I give gifts to my friends and family throughout the year if i see some thing that i know would be useful or has been overlooked.
Great getting round the table for a great meal, but now my children are grown up Christmas has lost some of its sparkle

+1 OP. nice for the kids but the true meaning has long been forgotten.....
Are you referring to the Winter solstice, a celebration the Christians camped on 2000 years ago by any chance?

Bl00dy hate it.

I work in the city so its full of people clambering over each other to buy what is generally tat.

You are pressured into buying tat for the sake of buying tat. For people you mostly neither want to buy for or receive from.

You then have to pretend that your pleased to have received your tat, only to take it home, put it in a draw or back of the cupboard and watch it fall out in a few years time.

For the last 2-3 years i have brought the said tat for people because its what they expect but ive generally asked people to give the cost of my present to either a childrens charity or the British Heart Foundation. There are far more worthly causes than me. I can a afford a £10k+ car so i dont want for need things for the sake of having them

What a load of tat!

i agree on the tat thing.

another one that i hate on the present giving is where you receive a card saying here is your present its 12 chickens to africa. ..... but then when you give the same to their spindly ungratefull little gobshites you get told that its not a suitable present and itunes vouchers next year would be better..... WTF ...

its not the charity donation i object to, buy a bottle of wine or nice beer and give the rest to a decent charity it the attitude of "i have made the decision that you should give to charity (even tho i dont know what you already give) and in doing that i feel better as i have done a good thing so now I dont have to do any more that is good send us presents" :x

i know it sounds really petty and a selfish but i hate people forcing their oppinion on me. if they just said "this year we have given the monetary value of our present spend to XXX charity" then i wouldn't care. but receiving a condescending card from CAFOD saying i've given a family the chance of life by thrusting a cow onto them, given that they cant afford to feed their children, that now they are also going t need to feed a cow. i find it a bit insulting.

(im assured by her indoors that there isn't vast flocks of chickens simply roaming the African plains)

I think that you'll find that this celebration has been around a little longer than Christianity.

[after all, 2000 years ago HE was only 14  ]
