Intermittent non starting issue on z4c

Hi I've currently got an intermittent starting problem on my coupe over the last 2 days the car wouldn't start

Doors unlock, radio works , lights etc work with key in

Try to turn the key to 3rd position and nothing , engine dead , no crank noise, nothing,

Try 8-10 times nothing . 10 minutes later will start first time . Then will work for a day or so. Then the issue will come back.

Battery reads 12.6v engine off and up to 14v engine on that rules That out

Any ideas, from reading past Threads , I'm thinking ignition switch or starter Motor ?

Any othersexperienced the same and what was it please

Many thanks

Sounds like ign switch more than likely but to confirm that you would need to check the output next time it fails to start as it could also be starter motor.

I would probably strip the covers off the steering column ready for next time it fails and have a volt meter to hand to check it, then you can be sure.

Thanks I've thought ahead and just got a ignition switch from breakers ordered for a fiver, no real loss.

Do you know how and Which colours to read across the volt meter ?

Thanks

Had this on my old roadster. Actually it saved it being nicked right off my drive so I am forever thankful for my own laziness in getting it fixed
It turned out to be the starter motor. Would work intermittently just like your symptoms. Try bump starting it and I bet it will fire up.

Easy fit when it turns up. Ten minute job, so worth doing just to rule it out.

Thanks Do you need to unplug the battery ? Don't really want to as I don't have codes for radio lol

Radio doesn't have a code, at least mine doesn't. But no, you can swap without disconnecting battery, it's just a multiplug and two small screws as per pics - Don't take the screws all the way out, just back them off enough until the switch is free.

Problem could be the key not charging. Try the second key

If the key was flat, the starter would still turn Ray - My money is on the switch, or less likely (hopefully) the starter. If it's still the same after swapping the switch, hook up a decent gauge length of wire to the terminal in this pic, and then touch it to the POS jump start point on the bulkhead, if the starter fires up then it could be wiring, or if your's is an auto, the starter inhibit switch.
