Hi Everyone - 58 Reg BMW Z4 3.0si Sport Coupe E86 - About 65000 miles on the clock - Driving home the other day - Just before I got home the ABS and DSC warning lights pinged on the dashboard - First time I have seen that - Local garage says issue is intermittent fault with the pump according to their diagnostics - In fact on the way to the garage the lights went out - I don't have the fault codes yet unfortunately - Would really appreciate some advice on whether I should fork out for a new pump, have this pump repaired or buy a second hand pump - I don't have the skills to fit a new pump myself unfortunately - If you can point me in the direction of a good garage I would really appreciate that too - Many Thanks.
Intermittent ABS/DSC Fault

I believe according to a recent thread Mike can repair an ABS unit, may be wrong. They are like £400 for another one so a repair would be the wiser option if it can be done.

Hi Guys - I can confirm the fault codes - 5DF0 - Hydraulic Pump Intermittent - 5DF1 - Hydraulic Unit Pump Motor Connection Faulty Intermittent - Sounds like a repair job? - Would I need to have the pump removed and post it up or drive the vehicle up etc - Many Thanks.
For further info - The garage also asked if I use it much because if not and it is standing in a garage for any length of time the valves or a valve within the pump can stick if not used - In fact I don't drive the car to work as I work very locally and just use it on holidays and to drive to the races occasionally so it can sit in the garage for a couple of weeks at a time (I know, sacrilege). It's not normally the valves that stick, as they sit covered in brake fluid. The brushes on the motor are the normal culprit, and this will be shown with the codes. It may also say "hydraulic pump motor connector faulty" and "hydraulic pump no signal"

Codes are the surefire way but typically:
1) DSC + ABS = ABS pump.
2) DSC + handbrake (in yellow) = pressure sensor
3) DSC + ABS + handbrake (in red) = wheel speed sensor.
4) DSC + ABS + handbrake (in yellow) + tyre pressure = wheel speed sensor.
5) DSC + ABS + handbrake (in yellow) = steering angle sensor fault / ABS pump.
6) DSC permanently on = steering angle sensor calibration issue / yaw sensor / lat accel sensor.
There are other combinations of faulty sensors which can cause similar lights but the above are the common ones.
