Independence Day

For me, this quote from a guardian piece summed it up. If this had actually been considered and an attempt to address been made during the last 5 years of government, Cameron may not have found himself in this mess.

"The result speaks volumes about the state of modern Britain. For the better off, a vote to remain was the obvious thing to do. For the less well-off, a vote to leave was their chance to protest about badly paid jobs, zero-hour contracts, bullying employers, and a sense that they had been forgotten.
These economic problems are deep-seated and of long-standing. Most of them have little to do with Europe. But the referendum has given millions of unhappy people a chance to protest. This is a country divided by wealth, geography and class."

They tried to protest previously by voting UKIP but 4Million-odd found that their voices weren't heard as they got no seats and no one paid any attention. Such a huge, monumental misjudgement by the government that will echo for years to come.

+1

You appear to be well versed in the principles of democracy, but seem to be unaware of the "free speech" aspect.
Proper socialists often forget that bit

An opinion sent to me:-

"They think it will cut the numbers of migrants coming, I bet it doubles. Do they really think the French are going to hold them back now. It's going to be a case of turn a blind eye lads let them f ' ers deal with it, we finally got somewhere to send them and get them off our hands.
Watching over our southern coast we have one RN boat to cover the lot, the French had 14, it's going to be Dunkirk in reverse.
The last shackles holding back the conservatives has been removed they can do what they God dam please now and walk all over us.

I read a similar report a while back that predicted Dover would be over run and to expect jungle type camps around the coast , to be fair to the French , it ain't their problem anymore . The same report expected our border controls to be moved to England , hence the ease of entry to England .
Nice to see " voice of the common man " Nigel farage telling his fellow common men how much he enjoyed his champagne and kippers for breakfast , I for one can't wait for breakfast tomorrow if that's what exit means

Yup. That's about the sum of it.

:

Ive always thought the French had a bum deal with the immigration problem being on their doorstep
The economic migrants are drawn to Calais ( then UK ) simply because the pot of gold is closest there & Shangri-la awaits all who make it over . I'm sure if Italy , Spain , Germany or France themselves had offered similar welfare access they would have little interest in crossing the channel

Interesting times certainly ahead for us, but I know one thing right now - the Remain supporters aren't half sore losers.

We are not all about to be engulfed in a tidal wave of poverty, pestilence and sexually transmitted diseases.
Here's what one of my sons posted on FB :) :

Been offline for a while and just turned on Facebook. Don't know what the news is today but lots of people commenting about something big. From the comments (eg 'they're so stupid/ignorant/selfish etc) I'm assuming today is National Bad Loser Day in the UK” #‎keepcalmandhaveacupoftea

I cant believe some of the crap I have listened to today on the coverage heard one expert tell me that the reason an area voted out was because 25% of the voters are over 60 to me that means 75% are under 60 so how come that area voted out? I have also heard some euro leader state that the agreement cameron negotiated is no longer on the table pretty obvious as we have just voted to leave so who gives a toss reminds me of kids its my ball and you are not playing with it

Would seem "they" want us to pack our things & vamooooosh !
Better that way than it dragging on as some commentators today were discussing a possible 2yr withdrawl :o

I don't think we hold any cards - never mind any trump card ( no pun intended) and honestly think it's best for all.
The country has voted out so we should go asap!

I think the exodus will spread - and then the trouble will start.

I like David Cameron, and was quite pleased when he won the Conservative leadership contest.

He took a huge gamble with this referendum, and from what I can make out the EU sh*fted him as the concessions they offered were pretty much worthless! Which pretty much sums up the EU, and to a degree most politicians; totally out of touch with the typical voter, but of course the EU gravy train runs on irrespective because it is pretty much unaccountable to anyone - can't even get the accounts signed off!

But at least we won't be paying for it any more thankfully! Which may be why the Dutch and Swedes are a bit rattled - someone will have to fill that financial hole!

Shame Cameron felt he had to resign, but in a way I have more respect for him doing that as it at least suggests he has some principles!

Corbyn hasn't resigned, but may have to soon! Shame really as with him as leader Labour pretty much guaranteed they were unelectable!

I can't see a long-term trade problem - we buy more from the EU than we sell to them so what would they gain from any restrictions?

And at least we now get to decide who we let in to the country!

Looking forward to another Scottish Independence referendum - hopefully they'll leave the UK and get paid for by the EU instead of the rest of the UK!

If they don't have one then maybe the silent majority (the English) should have a referendum on Scottish independence, and get rid! (Sorry Bing, you may need a passport just South of Gretna)! (And before I get too much grief, my father was born near Inverness)!

Glad the turn-out was so high, and that the electorate finally had the opportunity to express their opinion in a clear fashion - interesting times for sure!

Just been reading about those people now saying that they want to change their votes....

E.g. 'i voted leave, but i'm shocked and worried that we are leaving.'

Can we have a referendum on exiting these people from the country? They are dead weight. :|

You do know he shagged a dead pigs head as part of a food club or some crap at Eton? You know the independent boarding school for 13 - 18 year olds. That opens doors to get them into all sorts of stuff by all accounts.

He took a huge gamble with this referendum, It was to sate the extreme right Tories and from what I can make out the EU sh*fted him as the concessions they offered were pretty much worthless! because the EU should treat the UK better as they're special Won the war don't you know (with a lot of help from the Yanks) Which pretty much sums up the EU, and to a degree most politicians; totally out of touch with the typical voter unlike in the UK, but of course the EU gravy train runs on irrespective because it is pretty much unaccountable to anyone - can't even get the accounts signed off! Don't mention the unelected House of Lords! Don't mention the unelected House of Lords!

But at least we won't be paying for it any more thankfully! Which may be why the Dutch and Swedes are a bit rattled - someone will have to fill that financial hole! Shhhh! There's £1.7 Trillion in UK Debt we've told them about but at least the electorate don't know it's actually £3 Trillion!

Shame Cameron felt he had to resign, but in a way I have more respect for him doing that as it at least suggests he has some principles! Millionaire packs in his job to do the speech circuit. We all feel sorry for the lad!

Corbyn hasn't resigned, but may have to soon! Shame really as with him as leader Labour pretty much guaranteed they were unelectable! Andy Burnham. Remember that name Andy Burnham.

I can't see a long-term trade problem - we buy more from the EU than we sell to them so what would they gain from any restrictions? The word you're looking for is Tarrif. There will be Tarrifs on anything sent to or from the EU to England and Wales as they will be outside the EU. Could send it via Scotland but then the businesses would need to relocate and their pay taxes in Scotland.

And at least we now get to decide who we let in to the country! Xenophobia means a dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries You obviously don't mean that though do you?!.

Looking forward to another Scottish Independence referendum - hopefully they'll leave the UK and get paid for by the EU instead of the rest of the UK! See my other posts on the other thread. Numerous and detailed on why you are so so wrong and also why you dont understand why you're wrong.

Glad the turn-out was so high, and that the electorate finally had the opportunity to express their opinion in a clear fashion - interesting times for sure!

Mr Tidy,i was just reading this, and thinking to myself, yes, I agree with that thought......
Cameron has the right idea on wanting to cut benefits for those who are dependent on them,i.e maybe 3rd or 4th generation unemployed,or never worked a day in their adult life
While Sturgeon wants to tax us Scots more,to pay for More benefits for those who have no intention of ever working(and by that,i don't mean every one on benefits, just lazy ones who don't want to work).
She also wants Scotland to welcome more immigrants......
Yet most felow Scottish people I talk to want the same as the rest of the UK,in Less immigrants coming here,as they are getting fed up with the current situation!
......then you had to have a go and say "get rid".
Well most sensible Scots wanted to stay part of the UK,for reasons previously mentioned, because letting the SNP run us Independently would mean more tax, more immigrants, etc etc.
Oh,and Scotland have more spent on them per head,re health, etc than the rest of the UK,but we also have paid in Large revenues to Westminster coffers from years of Oil industry boom time(now on it's backside), because the UK government spent that money elsewhere, rather than doing the sensible thing, like Scandinavian countries, and put away money for a rainy day,for the Oil industry, for times such as now!!

Anyway,I think we should Leave the EU,as we managed for years without being ruled by them, and we will still be in the common market, which, in itself means we will still have to take in Migrant workers.....but hopefully we can set our own legislation on a cap on numbers, and let our fishermen fish our own Waters, and not the Spanish, etc :fuelfire:

Anyway, this will drag on for a while,no doubt...a bit like this post, lol
Hopefully it will all come good in the end....a Strong United Kingdom, not ruled/dictated to by Merkel and Brussels....and (despite being very Patriotic),a United Kingdom, where Scotland isn't run by a party (that I used to vote for),who let unlimited migrants in,and tax us more for the privilege.

Fuckin ridiculous listening to why some folk have voted one way or another. Actually scary that rationales are so unrational and that people are so subject to propoganda.

Genuinly believe that a protest vote against a government by a poorly informed magority will result in a fragmented UK within five years if it hasn't already really happened. Cameron and Osbourne as much as it grates have done a good job over the last few years improving the economy by a larger margin than other countries since the banks popped our bubble.

Not the way I wanted independence but ...........

I agree with a lot of what you say there Craig with a few changes. My business for one has benefitted from migrant workers who want to work rather than sit on their arse.

Most welfare is paid out to home grown folk who think the world owes them and are incapable of working for any extended period without going off the rails in my experience.

I also think we will end up independent but along the same path that England has taken us out of the EU by rehtoric rather than reason!

Thanks for that reply - it just confirms rational people can have a rational debate (unlike skelters apparently)!

We are all into uncharted territory - just need to see how it goes!

Oh and skelters, Cambridge tended to be a breeding ground for spies like Kim Philby, Antony Burgess, Anthony Blunt, and others - isn't that where that Andy Burnham you mention "studied"?..........

But then we may all be too busy reading garbage posted by a*sholes, even though there are a lot of flies to swat at the end of the day!

Was out earlier in local french town & had to smile at this :) are the french really that happy we voted brexit :D

Yes,Rational indeed....just could be advisable to not slag off us Scots....unless f course you hate all Scots?!!
Which is not very Rational,haha!
Uncharted territory indeed, and as said,i am a very Patriotic Scot, and some people up here think that is the reason to vote for Independence,or now it will be to stay in Europe.......under their control.
Both of which I think are wrong,as i said before. Think the UK needs to stand on their own, regards policy making and govern ourselves fully as a United country...as,whike I would like an Independent Scotland on one hand,i think without Oil revenue, etc,we are not in a position to do so,and are stronger with the UK army,a office etc etc!

My last take on this:

I know lots of people that voted leave, from different walks of life and for different reasons.

I haven't heard ONE bigoted comment from any of them. Not one.....

From the remain side however, there has been explicit ageist bile, contempt for the uneducated, talk of sewers bursting and lizards voting, fantasies about an independent state that excludes the rough, foreign, backwards, "racist" council estates and arguments for limiting old people's right to vote on the basis they lack the IQ or social nous necessary for making big decisions.

If the leaders of remain want to see BIGOTRY, they should take a look in the mirror. Their "anti-bigotry" is the only bigotry blighting this country right now.
