How do M drivers do it?

My speed limiter "chime" is set at 100mph, and every time it goes off, my wife looks over and tuts loudly, then I laugh and keep going. :driving: On the track day at Donington, it was going off all over the place. I think I should set it a bit lower, I don't want another over 100mph ban!!!!!

I agree, car is so quiet compared to anything else i find myself sitting at 90-95 all the time! Only a matter of time till i get a ticket.

I have an M Roadster - not easy to keep it at a reasonable speed. Here in Ontario there is a "street racing" law that has stiff penalties for exceeding 50 km/hr over the posted limit. I drive on 80 km/hr roads every day, so my chime is set to 130 km/hr to help me keep it under the 50 over rule....I still hear the chime several times a day, but it does prompt me to slow down.

If you get caught they suspend your license immediately, and impound your car for 7 days, then the hefty fines come. They have even pulled over police cruisers that were not on an emergency call doing more than 50 over, and impounded the cruiser!

Traffic flows pretty well here generally - on major highways the police will igmore you doing 30 km/hr over the limit....more than that and it depends on their mood. I've only ever received 2 speeding tickets in 28 years of driving - both were on trips for work and one was in Ohio....so although there was a fine I didn't lose any points. :D

To be honest, I find it pretty chuffing easy to stick to the speed limits - just concentrate on your driving?! My policy is one of choosing wisely when and where I exceed the limit. On residential 30/40 I resolutely stick to the limits, as those are the mostly likely candidates for speed traps and the limits are generally there for a reason. 50 limits tend to be ex-deregulated roads and are sometimes a favourite for cameras, so I tend to take a similar approach if they are urban. On motorways and deregulated rural roads I tend to exceed the speed limit appropriate to the road conditions, traffic and likely police presence.

If you're concentrating on your driving, I don't see why you can easily ensure that you stick to the limits in the areas where the risk of problems is higher and ensure you exceed the limit appropriately elsewhere? Seems I am in the minority here?! :?

This is the reason I drive a 3.0si instead of an M. When I test drove the M I realized that if I owned one I'd lose my license in weeks/months. The 3.0 is temptation enough.

I'm with you there.

I'm lucky in that I've got years of practice of driving deceptively quick cars.

I had a modified Polo G40 which had close to 200bhp and only weighed 980kg, then I had a modified Corrado VR6 with 250bhp/250lbft which would hit 160mph, then I went to a 3.8 M5, 3.6 M5 and then the Z4MC.

Of all of them, the Z4MC is the fastest, but I wouldn't say it is any more fun than any other of those listed - they each had their own quirks, good & bad bits and delivered power in completely different ways

I've only ever had 2 speeding tickets (both by laser) - one in a limit that had changed from 70mph to 60mph to 40mph in less than a week (and I thought I was good as I'd been stopped for 62mph), the second was out of frustration after some €®∑¡€#¶®¡∞¶#®¡ in a lorry took SIX MILES to overtake another on the A14 - as soon as he pulled in I just floored it and got done for 93mph in a 70 limit. I'm currently clean, but that's mainly due ot me having my speed camera alerts on, and watching every bridge, layby and suspicious car on the road - along with keeping my eyes out for people stepping out on me, potholes, raised grids, debris, etc.

You'd be amazed how quickly you can stop when you're going sideways ;)

I set the computer to squark at me at 80 as my failsafe in case I totally forget in the spur of the moment. Doesn't mean I don't hear it squark a lot but I'm aware then.

Still mine's only a sprightly 3.0i :driving:

I remember having something that would do this for me.. is it a Road Angel nav?

alwayas over. so far, 2 of my friends have been done for speeding in my car and they were shocked when they were caught. i just keep an eye out and let go of my foot early
