HID Kit Recommendations

Can anyone recommend an HID kit that works (well)?

I fitted a cheap one... and it was a mistake.

i have fitted a few and only ever had one failure.
but a well known shop like https://www.hids4u.co.uk/hidkits.php?car=35478

https://greyhead.co.uk/other-things/are-aftermarket-hid-lights-legal-uk
the law talks about aftermarket adapted headlights, but if you know a sensible mot man he will just look for correct beam - which mine is

Technically...
HIDs are a contravention of Construction and Use regs if they don't have auto-levelling and headlamp washers. Bulbs need to be "E" marked as well. Our local police force use this as a method of seizing the boy racer's cars even if they cannot pin any other crimes on them when they break up the cruise meets.

If you have headlamp washers, can demonstrate a good focused beam and have made a good job of hiding the installation I doubt most MOT places would be too concerned.

yes yes and yes :)

Long as you don't go stupidly blue colour, have headlamp washers and have the height adjusted properly, I don't think any MOT place will worry, I know several people who had HID conversions and their car passes every time, my last Z4 I had them in for ten years and my son has it now,

Probably a stupid question but do you need a separate HID kit for dipped beam and main beam? looked into getting these last year but did'nt bother in the end but driving about in the dark evenings with the halogen bulbs i realise it would be better to navigate by smell rather than rely on the lights,

Yes they are two separate bulbs, you only really need to change the dipped beam for a huge difference

I'm perfectly aware of the MOT situation. I was just looking for recommendations on the kit itself.

Are these not instant MOT fail now?

As of 20th May 2018 the MOT manual refers to HIDs being a failure if fitted aftermarket to a non-HID unit, washers are also required for HID. How an individual tester chooses to interpret that is down to them but I can't really see a lot of wriggle room TBH, I imagine testers will get clarification one way or the other from DVSA at some stage as inconsistencies creep in.

Just... no.

I've had an eBay HID kit in my car, works as it should without flickering.... although....

I bought it as "55w" 5000k so it looks white without any blue tinges to the colour. Despite trying various bulbs (even 4300k), and even a couple of different ballasts, I've failed to achieve the white colour, and each time the light looks blue. It looks OK, but I don't think suits the car's older age.

Following this thread to see if anyone has good recommendations on HID kits that are actually pure white!
