Heart vs head 2.8 vs 2.0

Wow, thanks everybody for their input. Didn't expect so many replies.

So I was planning to go for a test drive last Friday in the 2.8, but thought I would confirm up some insurance quotes first, just in case it got serious. Any way, could write a whole other thread about the nightmare scenario that is my quote, lets just say it involves company car no claims and an international license. So by the end of the day after hearing some insane quotes, I was pretty depressed and thought the Zed dream was over.

But today gave a call to Aviva, after a recommendation from a friend in a similar situation to me and they were extremely helpful and now I have realistic quote good for 60 days, ZED dream back on. Happy to share more info if anyone else is in similar position.

So back to my original dilemma, it seems that it really comes down to personal choice. I'm going to test drive the 2.8 and maybe put in a cheeky cheeky offer if I really like it. But you guys are right, best to wait for as much as I can get and bargain hard.

Thanks Cesela for the tip about buying end of quarter and thanks for the welcome Adamski.

Will keep you guys posted. Thanks,

Will

Just a quick update guys, so put a deposit down on a 2.8 today, compromise was that it had no sat nav, so got them to chuck in the semi integrated garmin unit FOC! Can't wait take it for a spin. Will put pictures up when I get it. Thanks for all the help guys. Will :D

Good choice  I prioritise power personally & the only time I didn't was when I bought my 520d & then i spent everyday I drove it regretting it...never again!

As another poster said bigger is always better :driving: ...apart from fuel bills

I have a 2.0 which is fine until you decide to participate in the annual meet and end up hanging on to the back of the last car in the convoy.
On that basis alone i am gonna save up and buy me some "POWER"! and blitz all my fellow forum members next time out :poke:

Well I haven't driven the 2.8i yet, but I'm looking forward to feeling the difference.

On another note, I tried to get the 5 year service plan for free with the car. He gave me some spiel about squeezing every penny out of him already. He then went on to say that as I only plan on keeping the car 2-3 years, the 5 year plan at £450 (£300 a couple years ago, grrr), would not be worth it. As 1st service would be in 2 years, then a further one at year 3. Which he then said, combined would come to around £350. Been looking on line and in forum to try and confirm these prices but can't see to find a firm recent price for services for the car. Any ideas if he is right, or is he just trying to fob me off? Plan on pushing hard to get it chucked in anyway, but if I can't, is it worth getting the plan?

Cheers, Will

I was recently told by my dealer that they charge £291 for a first service. Based on that I cant imagine 2 services coming in at £350...

My first service was £330 mark and that was on a 35i. Must be lower for the 4 pot as I can't see it taking much oil compared to the 6 cyls. If you get servicing for free, of course take it. I'm not so sure you'd save or be that much worse off if you paid for it, prolly work out the same ish...

When I ordered my car servicing was £300, 12 weeks later when I collected it and paid the bill it was £450. 50% increase in 12 weeks is a bit steep. Lucky for me I had the original order in my pocket clearly showing £300 on the deal so they couldn't wriggle out of that one.

Quadracer, when was that? Just curious to see if it went up in price recently or a while ago?

Dave, I was told the 2nd service should be cheaper, as there is less to do....

Good luck as you've put your deposit down!
Should have held off with the deposit until youve done all you can on the deal, I can't see them shifting now. :?

Yeah, I believe it is cheaper but I don't know how much. I'd still be surprized if you weren't better off with the service pack. If you do only break even, it would probably make the car more sellable.

Worth remembering that if you purchase the service pack and lump it into the finance deal, you will pay some interest on it. So it will really cost you slightly more than the quoted figure.

The service pack was £350 when I bought my car 12 months ago.

I believe there are various levels of service packs. The £350 version is the basic spec! Its more expensive now tho!

Have a look on bmw.co.uk and go to the owners area. You'll find a full explanation there.

A basic service package and a package plus (a bells and whistles job)

Thanks guys, I'm leaning towards the basic, like you said I reckon at worst I'll come near break even, and say if I keep it slightly longer, then will only benefit.

At £450 I would get it - cant see the servicing being any less than that, and if you sell privately before the time is up it's a good selling point.
