HARTSIDE and NORTH PENNINES LOOP Sun 4th October

Just got home, and what a great day , we really enjoyed it, great roads and great company loads o' fun, and yep Paul we had to return via Alston and do hartside again and apart from me nearly arse ending some nob pulling in( no indication) had the road to ourselves,
Thank you both for all the effort you put in to make sure everyone is happy , safe and really enjoy the day, well done.
Maurice and Andrea.

So so glad I made the journey, albeit arriving little later than most!
Some fantastic roads for driving and great bunch of people to spend the day with.
Another well organised event, well done Steph and Paul!

What a great day, just wanted to say a big thanks to Paul and Steph for organising and treating us to yet another great run on some really fantastic driving roads. It was great to meet up and spend a good days driving with old friends once again

I only took a few photos of the day, so here they are.

Hi all,

Well the traffic gods were with us most of the day and we had a terrific run on nearly all the route. The numbers meant it was relatively easy to keep together and the weather though dull, was good enough to make the most of the roads. Steph and I had a great day and as always, we're relieved that everyone had a good time, especially as, in some cases, folk travelled quite a way to join us.

It's surprising how the pressure builds to the day hoping that all goes well and folk feel it worth the effort (and increasingly, cost) to take part - hence the recces and planning. So thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

It's always brilliant to meet up with like minded forumites and a big smile when we saw Swiftly (Nick and Lorraine) at the start together with AlienZed (Maurice and Andrea) who we first met on Castles and Coast when they said they'd return for another run - great stuff. Good to meet up with Stevo//m in his impressive black Z4MC, Dave and his daughter Steph (Davegolfr) in his Golf R, and then of course our regular on nearly every run from the very start, Craig (Chezsherman). :D

A late post and text meant we might get to see Richard and Julie (MefiEcosse) somewhere on the route and what a delight to see them walk through the door at Hartside café. They'd missed us at Hexham but knew our route. (Sorry you missed the early roads but really glad you had a good time with us in the afternoon). It was great to meet up again.

The route worked out well (despite the uneven road surfaces - can't avoid the sad state of some of our roads  ) with the sun trying hard to break through around our first coffee break. Up to Hartside we'd arranged for Craig to lead (he knows the route well) and we dropped in mid way to bring along the back of the line. At Alston we took the lead again and made the decision (due to having a clear road) to continue up and over Hartside then return to the café for lunch after - made for a good enough run but the pass was surprisingly busy with the challenge of dealing with motorbikes (slower on the corners and on the brakes) pedal cyclists - ok if not in a group and met at the right time to safely overtake and the Sunday drivers, all of which didn't spoil our enjoyment of this brilliant road. :driving:

There were a number of other car groups out - very noisy exhausts, hoodies, Halford aftermarket kits. Then a top spec black Merc, max revs, blaring exhaust, drifted out the car park, hit opposite lock as he drifted away leaving black tracks back to Alston. Each to their own and I love it all but I'm guessing they'll attract attention and we'll end up with a blanket 50 limit. Hope not, this is such a fabulous driving road, though with such 'Fast and Furious' type activity it'll likely happen - damn! :( (Haven't seen much of this before).

After more chance to chat over lunch we headed back to Alston and our North Pennine loops. Just after Allenheads I had a quick word with Craig and he was keen to lead through one of our mid week run favourite valleys (thought he might - I knew it was one of his favourite routes) so Steph and I waved everyone on - it's great to have a different view of proceedings and it was fun at the back. Mind once at the front there was no stopping him and Craig just kept going! Good lead though Craig - thanks for that - nice one  (right up to where you missed the turn off and took us all down that cobblestoned high street again  - once was enough!) .

A quick stop and a reorganisation had us heading back out of Alston and we pulled everyone in at Kilhope Lead Mine visitor centre to use the loo. Nice location and a good stopping point in the future (nice small café). Checking everyone was ok we were able to head for our last stopping point (the Crown at Catton on more terrific roads) for a well earned drink (coffee and soft drinks available) and good natter about the day.

Another good days driving folks - magic.

I'm tired so I'll post up some photos tomorrow.

Just to echo Pauls comments, A big thank you to Craig also for his efforts in leading us , great fun on the run thro valley and the run up to Alston , when we managed to get away from the group :driving:
Good stuff Craig
Cheers M

Thanks Maurice and praise well earned but in the best 'RAF Battle of Britain' tradition 'Steady on Simon' 8) - plenty of action going on at the back with Swiftly setting a cracking pace :P In fact the standard of driving was excellent again. Whenever we set up such a hoon there's always concern that we get the pace right and I reckon everyone had a great time with enough to challenge whilst remaining safe and sending everyone satisfied and home in one piece. (Except for Dave who gets a bit frustrated stuck at the back  - you'll have to get yourself that Zed - hope you appreciated us coming to join you - that Golf R certainly has some 'lift' in the mid gears and a funny coughing blart on the over-run :? ) :driving:

It's really difficult to get decent photos when being thrown about in the Zed but here's some of the best of the rest. . . .

Nice to have an ///M on the run

Four wheel drive, 300bhp and impressive acceleration - but a bugger to see around . . . .

We got to cross a ford at Kilhope car park entrance . . .

The Crown at Catton - impressive car park image to finish. :driving:

Hi Paul and all,
Just to re-iterate: great day's driving, thoroughly enjoyed both that and meeting you all for the first time, certainly glad I made it up there despite not travelling furthest (think Swiftly wins that one..)! Very good organisational skills on show and a very warm welcome was afforded to all. Equally, some very impressive driving skills demonstrated - not by me; driving twisties that you've never done before is a challenge for everyone I guess but I did at least try to keep up! There certainly is some terrain out your way.
I can check later but I think I did in the region of 380 miles in the day at about 27-28mpg (cue shouts of "you're not using it properly"...). Two top-ups along the way and I was home fractionally after 7pm from a 7.30am departure.
I'll make an effort to do something in the Dales in the first half of next year as a return gig (*ties knot in pyjamas*).
Whatever cameras you guys and gals were using, do let me know, just about made my car look acceptable, despite it being filthy!

Some good photos there Paul, just glad Steph managed to snap a few :D

Steph finds it really difficult to use the camera when we're on a hoon; focus through a dirty windscreen is not easy either. I need a mount and a remote trigger - we miss too many superb photos but they are generally when we're on a bend, accelerating or braking - I often hear the odd expletive

Think Maurice might have won that one Steven with a few more miles travelled to get up here. Thanks for making the effort to come up and join us

Steph's using a Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ60. It's got a phenomenal zoom on it (x60) which with a very steady hand is useable but we bought it because it has a 5 axis stabilizing system. Image quality is not good enough for me but it's a lot easier to use in the Zed than a DSLR.

Some great pics there, steph's done good.happy memories of a great day.
Ended up doing 574 mls this trip , but we did sneak a few roads in on the sat, , otherwise it would have been about 460 mls,
On the way up av 31.7 mpg , on the run 20.9, and 30.3 on the return home,
But who cares. :D

You haven't been tempted and gone over to the dark side have you Angus?

Afraid so Nick Sorry but I couldn't resist any longer. Time will tell on whether it is the right choice!

Paul please do not think that I am disappointed with our trips out . I consider that I'm fortunate to be invited along with you and Steph . I have been out with you and the other forum members on a number of occasions now and can hand on heart confirm that every time it has been a pleasure. What I do enjoy is to be with like minded people who enjoy our cars ( whatever they are) and most importantly the drive . Having organised a hoon myself I do understand the pressure that goes with it , people who criticise should try it themselves.
To follow on from Sunday I did appreciate you taking up my rear (no pun intended), sorry I missed the earlier attempt ,but this was your day .
I also thought Craig did a great job when asked to do so , teacher and pupil comes to mind and like Craig would be only happy to help if required when I do come across to the Z side.
