Greatest band ever

sure, but have they released the same quantity of 'new' material and chart positioning? :poke:

I've been a huge fan of U2 since their early days (same for Simple Minds) but you've got to admit that their first few albums aren't a patch on the quality of the Stones earliest works, which makes them an inferior band. Is Bono in the same class of songwriter as Mick and Keith (No!)? :poke:

If its not down to record sales and longevity, then it all boils down to personal taste...

Like I said in my original post, Nirvana gets my vote. They really broke the mould for me in terms of their music, attitude and clothes. I saw them live when I was 16, they sounded awful and countless fights kicked off, but it was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. Well that and a crazy Neds atomic Dustbin gig, where countless fire extinguishers were let off and a 20 foot long inflatable TV was hurled around the crowd.

So I will pull the poking stick out of your arse and fire up my bleach album

Greatest Band of All Time
The Band

[/endofthread]

All Time Best Band With No Name
Bob Dylan's touring band of 2000
Charlie Sexton, Larry Campbell, David Kemper and Tony Garnier.

Best I've seen...

Springsteen with the E Street Band
Bon Jovi
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers
U2 before Bono went mad.
The Who
Rolling Stones
Steve Earle & The Dukes
Anna Calvi and band

There's many many more if I could remember!

Queen were my first thought, then possibly Dire Straits.
It all depends who peaked during your formative years, I think.

That would be Duran Duran / The Smiths etc for me then although I didn't like them at all.

Saw Mark Knophler supporting Dylan at Braehead in Glasgow in 2011 and again supporting Dylan in Brooklyn, 2012. Great musician. New album might be worth a listen too.

No right and wrong answers but some great bands, I think all of those mentioned are in my collection.

Purely down to personal taste

Managed to sneak into see pink floyd by carrying an amp into free trade hall in Manchester during Animals tour!

Missed seeing Yes in 72 as I was on a youthful promise that didn't come to anything!

Stones are amazing live but disappointed with Springsteen live. (Just too big)

Deep purple were seriously loud! Seriously.

Always missed led Zeppelin so never seen them live

Keep them coming but......

Best band is one band!

Mine is still the Who

Nobody like the Eagles?

No.

Watch the History of The Eagles documentary and see what you think.

Really nice people who would stab each other in the back for one dollar it seems.

For me the greatest rock band ever has to be Iron Maiden. A group of incredibly talented musicians and that voice is incredible.
For me a rock band has to be better live than recorded and there are few that can pull that off

Runners up Pearl Jam and Muse

In reality I dont think there is a definative, greatest ever band ever!

Quite right, it varies with me day by day. Beatles, Stones, Who, Tom Petty, etc etc

One thing is certain, its not One Direction!

I would say Talking Heads were pretty good and quite influential - ask Radiohead
Also early Roxy Music were so different they left a huge imprint on popular music :D
