Glad to find a Z4 specific forum

Oddly enough we are having a bit of a warm spat. Not too unusual for VA as I have seen a variety of wx patterns on the east coast.

Fixit man, I may have to tear into the box to see if anything is broken or just in need of TLC. Any advice on getting out the lock box? especially where it concerns that gooey substance that holds the insulation layer?

Hi,

yeah the goey stuff is Butyl, you have to cut it ...so as you pull the cover away from the door use a sharp blade , it sticks back OK normally.
There are some "how to's" on this forum as far as I remember the door handle has to come off , Hard the first time I did it but once you know what's going on it's a 5 minute job , good luck

Finally got around to replacing the lock mechanism. What a PITA! After a couple of hours of contorting and colorful, metaphoric language outbursts, I got the new lock box in place. And.... no change. I am guessing it is a software issue...

Oh, and that Butyl stuff is heinous.

Question for the collective:

Just got finished replacing my cracked third brake light with a clear one and found an empty electrical connection on the same loom that holds the third brake light connection. Any ideas what that other connection is for?

Howdy, Hutch. Yes, the truck release inside the cabin works. I could not find a suspect cable in the space and was thinking it possibly is for an accessory or additional trunk light???

Can't help with the extra connection but I can say don't be alarmed or too sad if the 3rd brake light cracks again. Seems to be a known problem on the E85 :/

As for the sticky black goo (butyl-based) that holds the plastic weathershielding sheet in place, the best method I know in handling it is to ensure your hands are wet before touching it so it doesn't stick to your fingers.

Pity. The clear 3rd I just picked up was a bit pricey...

Good suggestion. Butyl and I hashed it out a while ago when I swapped out the door mechanism. Tough little bastard. The lining got the worst of it.
