Girlie Car.......wtf......!

I'm always mystified why there's so much concern and drama over this issue.

Do you seek these people's approval prior to buying a car? Why need it after?

Hairdresser etc comments say more about the person saying it than who it's aimed at.

Lance, it's a forum, you know, a bit of banter and all that, it's not serious :P

Used to get that comment from a few when I drove my Mk2 MX5 which was a brilliant fun car and couldn't care less what people thought - they had no idea of the enjoyment that car gave me.

My Z4 being called a hairdressers car ? I'd just take them out in it - I'm pretty sure it would leave an impression that would change their view. . . . or perhaps their opinion of hairdressers ?

Everyone I've taken out in the Zed have been blown away by it.

Most people who make such comment do so because they've heard it said by others and often have very little appreciation of cars.

:driving:

My E88 that was a girly car but I've never got the Z'ds being girly cars. The Z3 the car of James Bond and well to be honest it's very rare that I've seen a bird behind the wheel of a Z3 or Z4. Just doesn't happen.

For me a guy driving a Z'd is normal, I giggle when I see men driving the E88 especially older men as it's just not the group that car was aimed at but each to their own.

Bet the guy who thought it was girly would have driving a MG back in the day or and E Type. Just ignore them it's probably the guy trying to justify why they can't have one when actually he possibly can't afford or want to buy what the wife wants.

I see women behind the wheel of countless facelift 2.0 roadsters in black and silver.

Not in Edinburgh. Most verts are driven by blokes. Two Z4s across the road, blokes, the 350 slk next door, blokes. MX5 owner across the way, bloke. 330 across the road, blokes. Every E85 I've seen recently all blokes. Slk round the corner, bloke funnily enough.

Very occasionally I'll see a E88 driven by a woman never with the roof down which makes me wonder why they bought the car but usually more guys than gals. Maybe it's just Scottish blokes that really like a vert more than the females?

Don't tend to get that comment at all.... middle age crisis ones, compensating etc - yep, get them. And, as far as I'm concerned:

I came back from picking my son up yesterday in the Z (brief bit of afternoon sun 8) )

I pull onto the drive as a couple are walking past my house and I hear the woman say "see, it's not a girlie car there's a bloke driving it".............! :headbang:

To make matters worse my brother makes hairdresser jokes every time he sees it...... "But it's 3 litres" I feebly try to protest' "it's a proper roadster" of course it makes no difference to his remarks of "so when can I get my highlights done" :violent1:

Anyone else?

Here is a great Canadian review of the 3.0si

http://www.auto123.com/en/bmw/z4/2007/review?carid=1070801600&artid=90628

The reviewer said:

The "si" designation represents the install of BMW's latest I-6: the 3.0-litre N52, featuring a lightweight magnesium block and BMW's latest Valvetronic, variable valve timing technology. Not only is this engine considerably more powerful than the standard Z4 3.0-litre mill, it provides much better mid-range response while improving cornering by lightening the load bore by the front wheels.

The N52 generates 255-horsepower @ 6,600-rpm and 220 pound-feet of torque @ just 2,750-rpm. That's 40 horsepower and 35 pounds of torque more than dispensed by the standard 3.0-litre engine; and what a difference it makes. Having driven the less powerful Z4 and been quite content with its gusto, I was absolutely elated burying my foot into the 3.0si. This engine pulls ferociously- especially on the highway where passing power is frankly startling.

Me thinks that the only folks would call such a car "girlie" are those whom truly wish they themselves owned one. And UK cars make ten or so more horsepower too.

Cheers from Canada!

Most people are surprised to the point of double-taking when they see my OH driving HER coupe.
So not a ladies car at all really.
Aside #1
Number of Men on here = lots
Number of Women on here = not that many
This proves that the website is on the internet and not much else
I wouldn't be surprised if Mumsnet had more blokes on it than women. :?

Aside #2
I have a Rav 4 as a hire car at the moment. Now THAT is a girly car
It has a Tennessee Licence plate

Therefore I have called it
Tena-Lady

The first person who makes a "girlie car" comment about my Zed is going to get whupped upside the head with my manbag. Or maybe I'll just scratch their eyes out.

Haven't heard that one, actually. I've gotten quite a few midlife crisis comments though. Yeah? So?

Phmeh ...

Girly car just means that Girls love it.!!!! Result

I've had a few nice looking cars over the years which have always turned heads. Unfortunately it's normally blokes heads.

With the Z the amount of women who notice it has really surprised me.!!!!

Girl power lol

To be fair, I am not surprised. Its so fricking cold up in scotland only a real hard nut would be able to drop the top and not die through hypothermia!

All this 'girlie car' talk but what does it mean?
Does it mean that a car has no balls?
Does it mean only girls are allowed to drive it???
Does it mean its a car that's only able to be driven by girlies who can't handle 'big powerful manly cars' :x

Which all or either is insinuating that girls can't or shouldn't drive what these numpties deem as man cars. Absolutely ridiculous.
I'm off to the piss boiling thread. :x

Same application as a girly v manly drink I guess (i.e. cosmopolitan v stout).

People associate the Z4 with the 'hairdresser' bracket, its a fact of life - small soft top roadsters tend to be assumed to be 'hairdresser' cars. Imagine being an AMG SLK owner - that must be awful the amount you have to defend your purchase with your 5.4l V8 engine !

Never had it here - but i think to some extent the M Coupe escapes it. My attitude is 'who cares - it's a great car'. TT and SLK owners are much more likely to get 'girlie car' thrown at them, and i'm always happy to settle scores with an old fashioned drag race :)

i've heard every thing, from hairdresser car, gay car, to pimp car.
i don't care as long i have fun with my car, and i'm happy with it, they can al walk to hell
