Exercise?

Ok, I am on a major health kick. Basically a eight week weight loss challenge. As a part of this I will be doing exercise classes, gym etc.
I was wondering does anyone do actual classes over gym work outs? I am bit scared of classes as I might not to be at there level. Classes I have been looking at is body combat. Does anyone do this? I am not the fittest so I am little nervous :oops:
 
I was teaching taekwondo up until a couple of years ago, you'll have fun :thumbsup:

If you have a lot of fun, you might want to take up a proper martial art, most will give you a better level of fitness and a certain amount of improved self confidence.
 
I'm on an exercise kick too, but I'm doing it from home, I'm cycling, mountain bike 8 mies a go at the mo, 2-3 times/week and I have just bought a cross trainer and put it in my garage to use in-between and play double squash on a Saturday, just do what you can to start with and build up from there, good luck :thumbsup:
 
Spinning classes can be fun and push you harder than if you are just in the gym on your own on the exercise bike.
 
Be warned, exercise becomes addictive...perhaps an obsession!

As you do more you feel good and lose weight...so you want to do more! I've gone nearly 50 years avoiding all forms of exercise but have just discovered how good running, cycling and swimming can make you feel. I'm heading to Yorkshire this Friday to participate in the Three peaks challenge - and looking forward to the hard work!
 
I have done Jiu Jitsu at my gym, but that was from the start, so we were all at the same level. I'm now only doing cardio training and weight lifting stuff. I would just ask at your gym if there are beginner classes or what if when you're new to it :) Good luck, sport is fun and the good feeling after a workout can be addicting ;)
 
I am lazy unless I go to a place of exercise. I have my own rower, stepper, bike & free weights. I don't use them at home. I brought a wii so could do abit but its never been used lol.

I do loads of walking (1 hour a day then 3 hours a day on weekends with my dogs). The thing that kind of scared me is I went on a 3 day boot camp last month. It was all very extreme and I came home after 24 hours. It was too much for me and really highlighted how unfit I must be.

I want the 8week challenge to be the start of a life style change. I have sorted my diet out so its just the exercise I am struggling with.
 
You can also have a chat at the gym, tell them what your goals are and ask them to put a workout together :) Don't be scared, go for it :D :wink:

lucky for me i have a physical job so weigh the same now as i did 20yrs ago :)

however washing & specifically drying & waxing a car is great aerobic exercise with a satisfying end product :thumbsup:
 
I worked a couple of years as a fitness instructpr when I was younger (and fitter :oops: ). Could never get the hang of body combat - no coordination - but my wife was fine with it. Body pump was more my thing although spinning was a personal favourite, unsurprising given I'm a biker. Loud music, dimmed lights, disco lights and strobes - and you got to yell abuse at a class of customers at the same time :evil:
 
Getting in the cardiac zone is the important bit, get that heart rate up during excercise and the pounds will fall off...
 
I would add that whatever you decide to do to keep fit, it will help enormously if you actually enjoy it. Otherwise it quickly becomes a chore and then sooner or later the motivation wears off. Try lots of different things, keep it interesting and you should do well! Good luck :thumbsup:

I'm a part time group exercise instructor and one of the classes I teach is Body Combat! Do it! Great class and great for any level of fitness.Don't be scared of going to clases. Everyone in there started new at some point and you usually get help if needed by the regulars. :)

I taught TaeKwondo for around 11 years and classes like Body Combat will give you a higher level of fitness training than pure TKD training. I have some of my old TKD participants who still train in my Body Combat classes. They use it as a part of their general fitness routine. They go well together.
 
I do spinning classes at my gym, absolute torture!

Depends what your fitness goals are, but the more you enjoy it the more effort you'll put in thus being more beneficial.

Have you tried aquarobics or zumba? These seem to be more laid back and fun based to start off.

You only get out of it what you put in :) Good luck

Agreed that it's addictive, I run 4-8miles three times a week, swim a mile twice a week, play football twice a week and try to get to the gym every day. Then there's the odd badminton or tennis game, and cycling when I can be bothered.

Hoping to compete a half IronMan (70.3) next year - http://www.ironmanuk.com/ and am entering a triathlon in March I think it is, in Cheshire.

Haha I have no co-ordination so should be interesting. I cant even dance its that bad lol. I did look at body pump classes but thought was more for boys and looked harder so opted for combat initially.

Thats made me feel bit better. Biggest thing for me is not knowing what to do or expect. I did utube a few video's to see if they gave me a idea :-)
 
If you're on an eight week course with your gym, they should have a program to monitor you every week to see what's going on - well that's what my local gym did. if it's the same, then part of that program will be to devise a program for you that is achievable and something that will gently push your limits over the weeks whilst being enjoyable.

have a chat with them as they are there to help you and it's in their best interests to get you interested in exercise and going there three times a week. if you enjoy and see results at the end of the eight weeks, you'll sign up for more.
 
I've done a few different classes, body pump was a faff changing the weights all the time, spinning was good cardio and when they tell you to turn the resistance up I took the opportunity to sneakily turn it down. I quite like body balance but it's more for the mind and flexibility/posture/balance/core. You could try circuits which will be quite simple to follow. I'm not ashamed of having to sit out if I have to for a couple of mins.
My favourite sport is swimming though. I think it's all about finding what you enjoy that will stick to and a combination of dietary modifications. Good luck! Weight loss and fitness can be hard.
