No mistake. It wouldn't have been much cheaper at the Indy I use either. Sure the pump is a couple of hundred quid but it is quite awkward to get to - hence the labour. I was expecting it to cost that much so it wasn't too much of a shock (only to the wallet).

It's very easy to get to on the Z - nothing much needs removing at all for access apart from the undertray. Much easier than it is on the 3 series. Even the 15 min bleed afterwards is fully automatic while the mechanic goes off and has a cup of tea.

I think me & my nephew changed the pump on my 3.0si in under an hour, it’s a quick & easy job :?

Well at least, now you've joined the forum, you can ask about these jobs first and go to the garage armed with the info. May save you a few quid later on. Or, depending on your confidence with spanners, read up and do the work yourself.
That's the beauty of a forum really; always someone who's done it before and can guide you.

Mine finally failed. 150k miles and god knows how many track days now. Well impressed, swapped pump and thermostat for OE parts this morning.

Just to add to this - my water pump has just started to go on my 2008 2.5i sport c at 77k. Thanks to previous reading on the forum it was quickly identifiable before any overheating was experienced! Symptom was a quick spike in temp followed by a sharp drop back down to normal as the pump was working on/off. The pump did appear to be working when I ran the bleed procedure with the expansion cap off to have a look. Handily, I was just down the road from my local garage so just slowly rolled it over to get it checked and there were a few codes from the pump so it's in for a replacement. Cheers!

I think mine failed this morning. Luckily for me we had just popped a mile up the road and it over heated on the way back. I pulled over, let it cool down and then a short run to home with heater on full blast, so hopefully no damage done.

I read codes 2e81, 2e83, 2e84 and FF00? The first three all point to water pump failure. Water system has no leaks and is full. I tried the auto bleed procedure and not a peep. I've not tried fuses yet but I assume if I'm getting these fault codes, it must be connected.

Not sure what the FF00 is all about? Hopefully something to do with the water pump.

Gaz - 2006 E86 3.0si.

I replaced the one on the 3.0si at 130k miles according to my service history. Sounded much the same as yours, drove it up the road and the temp gauge went up. Let it cool and drove home with heater on. I remember reading some codes and thinking it wasn't totally conclusive, I also noticed the engine fan running when it wasn't normally (from memory at idle before the engine was warm.)

Replaced thermostat, water pump, refilled coolant and bleed procedure worked fine second try. I'd missed a bleed screw the first time I ran it. I'd suspect water pump from what you've described, unless its popped a fuse but then I wouldn't trust it anymore anyway given they're known to fail!

If that procedure doesn't run the pump isn't working, unless it is just a fuse. But like caius I would replace it anyway for peace of mind given that it will die anyway, and when it does overheating only takes about a mile. Plus it may leave you stranded somewhere inconvenient. My 325i one died at 135K miles.
