E89 road prescence

It's a first gen E89 but that's a very good price, it's got nav too. As said some 19's and even some different seats from a wrecker and yep that'd make a cracking drive it hard and park it anywhere car. Only concern would be the blowers but you could say that with any of them I guess.

Any looming issues there should be noticeable to the ears & eyes
Documented evidence of regular oil changes a must + i would be looking to buy off a owner that's had the car a while
You can generally tell from a conversation or A viewing if they know how to treat the car , turn up & he takes you out in a cold car ragging it from the off & its au revoir from me :D

Ah yes I had another look it's a private sale is'nt it, it's the impeller shaft oil seals that can go south if it's been switched off and not cooled after a hard run from oil starvation, but as you say you can tell how it's been looked after generally by the owner. I tried an identical car to this last year and seller was a nice kid but he ragged the s**t out of it from start up, thought I'd be impressed by the power, no way was I going to buy it.

I thought that all these N54 Z4 models had the electric water pump cool the turbos, which operated when you turn the engine off if the oil temp is too high? These turbos are water and oil cooled. I certainly get that on mine (pump buzzing sound if I turn off at 120c+), you can hear it running on switch off. I also recall reading about it on the N54 technical documentation somewhere... have to dig it out.

Yea that's true..

Water cooled...

Turbos are not as bad as they used to be for oil seal problems... Just think of all the turbo diesel cars knocking about on sludgey black oil and the turbos do 150k+..

The turbo's can suffer from wastegate chatter, but this can be dialled out with diagnostics, the set position can be adjusted to give the wastegate a better closed position.

As has been mentioned, oil quality is where it's at... Change it between intervals,it's only cheap oil so it's a no brainer.. It will help the life of all components immensely

Ha ha.... dont be daft John, and in reality the water cooling wont really help the old oil seal bearing issues...

Its just that turbo technology has come on a long way,and oils are so much better..... Leads to a better life for the turbo.

Like anything though,it will have an infinite life, like any bearing.....

Indeed they are water cooled.

Time I quit posting on here I think, spouting without facts in place as usual.

Hopefully just a tongue in cheek comment

When I bought mine I was leaving it running for a few minutes after a blast...it still ran the pump afterwards which I thought was odd. This lead me to digging online and pulling up the technical pdfs. Years ago the jap turbo and ford peeps were putting turbo timers on the car to do the same thing. Now it is automated to a certain extent. But as already said the best thing for the engine is very regular oil changes which is what I have always done with my cars. BMW reps always ask me why... I gave up bothering to explain

Yep stuck in the dark ages..

Escort cosworths used to have a reputation for popping turbo's at 60k hence the turbo timers and driving sedately for a couple of miles before shut down, as Gaz says how times change. Well it's good to now know the blowers are well cooled on the zed.

Yep and I think those turbos were just oil cooled, not oil + water, hence when you switch off the oil instantly evaporates and the turbo keeps spinning with no oil.

I started with a turbo car way back in 1980 and it was always the done thing to let it cool gently after a run - 30sec plus was the norm - the car never suffered any turbo failure in 125k miles - the waste gate used to stick shut as it was exhaust gas operated.
Certainly no cooling tho!

Well that's a very nice thing to say James.....I have to say I think there'll be quite a few sniggers in disagreement though..

However I do seriously appreciate the comment.

This thread has me looking at E89s now! Must admit I see a lot more of these on the road than E85/6s.

Great looks retractable hard top, all the power you need and a great sound.

Slightly bias yes but do I need I go on?[/quote]

just that the 35is sounds fab on a cold startup (Aston Martin anyone?), goes like stink and has sexy kit like heated steering wheel, adaptive lighting etc. Oh, did I mention the power? 8)

I have always loved the look of the E89 and with its folding hard top as well makes it a complete all rounder too.

Smaller engine the only one in manual though, you don't want to make that Automatic mistake again … :poke:
