E85 to E89 which engine + Best standard options??

Hi Guys,
Currently have an 05 E85 and realised it's time to upgrade to the E89
I have around £15K to spend and am thinking of the e89 28i as it seems to
Be the win win of best performance and best consumption versus the 18i and 20i

Was wondering what options you think are worth it?
I've heard all sorts of stuff on Bluetooth sound etc and some models having it some not etc, something about a combox?
Any advice? Is the 20i enough - seems a shame not to go for the 28i for increased performance
For no fuel usage increas?

It has to be a 3.0l six - bias declared at this point! :D

28i outperforms the 3litre six & gets better mpg and cheaper tax, they're pretty strong reasons for getting one.
Or you could get a 20i or the 18i and just get them remapped, they're identical engines & turbos & you should get a younger car for your money

£15k gives you lots of options - a newer lower mileage 28i, or an older higher mileage 35i. So then its down to what your priorities are: better mpg, tax or more power and acceleration (I know which I'd go for  ) :)

Im sure you're right but the smaller fours have to work harder for their living?
Is the "real world" fuel consumption that signifiicant ? Overall - Mid 30's from my last 3.0l - I've never owned a 2.0 four so I can't compare.

Performance differences aside, I do appreciate the relaxed drive of a six and the available of torque from low rpm without waiting for a turbo to spool up.

Look at some dyno graphs, the 2 litre 28i produces more torque at much lower rpm than the normally aspirated 3 litre ronk, the twin scroll turbo doesn't need to spool up

I ask as the only 4 cyl 2.0l turbo was an old school Saab way back in 1982

Back then you were right ronk, technology has moved on though and the n20 engines perform very differently.
The straight six engines do sound great, I think the turbo engines sound pretty cool in a different way though.

It's all about the engine, turbo six if you can stretch to it.

This.
Either way a six. The six cyl engine is smooth and satisfying in a way no 4 is, turbo or not. If you wanted a good 4 cyl car you'd be buying a Focus. :)

Why not a 35I DCT? With in your budget pal....

Cheaper to run & a newer car for your money are serious considerations

It all depends what you want from the car, is it a daily where better fuel economy is a factor and your happy pottering around in a four pot. Or is it a high days car that the fun factor is more important. My E85 3.0 will return low 40mpg on a run and i'm sure the larger engined E89 can sup fuel too. Your choiceI, but I know what I would go for

Take both a 4 cylinder and a 6 out for a drive and see what you think. You should be able to get a very nice example for 15k though.

One bit of advice I would give is try and go to a main dealer if you can it's worth it for the warranty. Something I didn't do and ended up regretting.

hmm interesting,
I thought the 28 was the obvious way to go - 0-60 in 5.5 secs
versus the 30 , 0-60 in 5.8 secs which in the real world is pretty much nothing
and real world econ of 38mpg (28) vs 30mpg (30) according to Honest John,
(On my E85 2.0 I get 41mpg average (honest john lists real world at 38 so I guess I'm frugal!?)

the car will be my main driver mainly on motorway sadly, but with a bit of country roads too
my commute is 120 miles (inc return) so fuel economy does come into it though I'm only in the office 2 days a week
the remap sounds interesting - just get a 20 and chip it to get 28 performance?
How much does this cost?

Remap costs vary, people have regretted using the cheaper option of the man in a van (read maniacs experience)
Evolve charge £600 for their map including before & after dyno runs.
The map can be applied to the 18i as well, all 3 variations have identical engines & turbos.
Rob

hmm, interesting, but on second thoughts the potential dramas with insurance etc, I'll probably live with stock,
so for 15k its either a 28 or a 30,
next up, what are peoples thoughts on best options? Any that are 'must have'?
I've heard enhanced audio is important as it cant be retrofitted?

If you look at £600 for a re map then do the sums to look at what that additional cash means when you look at 30mpg v 40mpg

A re mapped car will use more fuel when pushed!
