E85 to E89 which engine + Best standard options??

Hi there,

I went for the 28i. I spent a bit more but I got a lovely one. I would normally of gone straight for the 35iS but this one popped up quite local with an incredible spec. I took it for a spin and it's plenty quick enough!

IMO anything sub 6 seconds 0-60 is quick. I think the ZF 8 speed on the 28i is 5.3 seconds.

It's effortlessly quick. Happy to take anyone out in it who is local, it's really surprising just how good the 4 pot is!

Ok so any thoughts on best options to have?

Wind deflector and Parking sensors are must haves for me

Other nice to haves:
- Sat Nav is good, was too expensive when new
- Heated seats are good when roof down on a cold day, if you do this
- 17" wheels for a better ride

I upgraded from a 25i to a 28i to a 35is and they are all totally different.

If you have the cash for the initial purchase and running costs then the 35is is without doubt the one to go for. There is nothing quite like it.

If not then you have a straight choice. Do you want performance or the kudos of having a six pot and the sound that accompanies it?

Personally if you can have the 35is go for it, you won't regret it, if not then the 28i will not sound quite as good but the performance will be as close as you will get and not be too concerned about using the loud pedal. To be honest I was going to replace my 28i with another until I found my present one for the same price.

Have a drive of them all before deciding and enjoy

When I went to change from a 3.0 E89 last August, the salesman told me that the 35is was a different kettle of fish - I was very very sceptical.

I'm not sceptical now

My E89 is a 2.0 and it is my daily drive. I love it. I can't compare to the bigger engines, but it is plenty powerful for me. Most of my time I am nose to tail with someone else, but when I do get clear road or want to overtake it feels responsive, fast and fun.

Because I spend so much time in the car, I really appreciate the quality interior and I love the extra touches that don't necessarily come as standard
Essential for me are the heated sports seats and front and rear parking sensors - the car is a new shape for me and these have helped me protect my investment.
Wind defector is an essential and I would have bought one, if one hadn't come with the car, but this is an easy, if expensive add.
I have 19 inch wheels for summer which look great and I'm glad they came with the car.
I enjoy the extra storage, cruise and extended lighting, but I don't know if I would miss them if they weren't there
I don't have Idrive, but I have a sat nav, so I don't know what's else I am missing so don't regret not having it.
I don't have heated steering wheel, but with the vents well directed, I have never felt the lack of one and I drive in the cold with the roof down.
Whatever you go for, I'm sure you will love it
Viv

Oops, so essential, I forgot them. Autolights and rain sensor wipers. I think auto lights are standard but rain sensors aren't. I had them on my previous car and use them all the time. I would not have wanted my new car to have seemed a down grade!

Dont reject the idea of a bigger six until youve tried one - Its not just power and performance!
Even trickleing along in traffic the car seems relaxing.

Go onto the official bmw web page and look what they've got and go and try. We can all talk til the cows come home but there's only one way to decide.

Give your vin no to the dealer and tell them you want nothing less than your current spec.
Most of all, enjoy the search!

I started with a 23i, 2.5 straight six and loved it!, then I went to a meet and heard the sound of the 35is......the rest is history as they say! :D

With my £15k budget I chose mine based on :

Engine (35i)
Adaptive M suspension
Wheels
Colour (deep sea blue with cream leather like my beautiful old Golf V6 4motion)
Approved Used car from BMW network
Under 60k

I got all of the above and more for £13,600, 2009 model with 53k from Marshalls BMW in Hook, Hampshire, and they gave her a major service so I'ts not due in until 2019. Great deal.

Things like satnav and Bluetooth weren't a consideration. That's what my daily driver mk7 Golf is for!

I love the fact that it's just me and the car and no one can ring me while I'm driving!

However, if this was my daily driver, my list of priorities would be totally different.

Hi Guys,
Currently have an 05 E85 and realised it's time to upgrade to the E89
I have around £15K to spend and am thinking of the e89 28i as it seems to
Be the win win of best performance and best consumption versus the 18i and 20i

Was wondering what options you think are worth it?
I've heard all sorts of stuff on Bluetooth sound etc and some models having it some not etc, something about a combox?
Any advice? Is the 20i enough - seems a shame not to go for the 28i for increased performance
For no fuel usage increas?

Why not a 35I DCT? With in your budget pal....

Cheaper to run & a newer car for your money are serious considerations
Rob
Oh how you've changed your tune Rob now you've dropped your 3.0 for a baby engine. One could be mistaken for thinking you're trying to justify it to yourself :P

Not really Paul, it was the na 2litre that most comparisons/choices were between-the forced induction 2litre is a different kettle of frogs entirely. I think it stands up well to the 3litre in most aspects

I'm saying it's not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of fight in the dog which is important
I agree the 3litre six does sound very good though :driving:

(On my E85 2.0 I get 41mpg average (honest john lists real world at 38 so I guess I'm frugal!?)

Whats the secret Henry? I'm lucky if I get above 30 mpg average on my 2.0i, do you bother to actually accelerate?

I was checking the forum for mpg on 2.0 and this made me chuckle :P I'm around the 31 mark

There is a lot of good feedback,

Yes - test drive an 35i or 35is - as they sound sweet
Then - test drive a 28i if you can find one or an 20i for comparison.

As a daily driver a 28i has a considerable lower cost of ownership, and buy what is right for you.

However 28i will out handle an 35i, and if you have one modified - it will leave it for dust :fuelfire:
