e85 Hood Scoop Idea

I'm tossing the idea around of a blended hood scoop both for looks and functionality (post engine swap). Personally I think the Z4 lines are just screaming for a scoop, but additionally I'd like to use a carb style manifold (still EFI) and pull high pressure cold air off the hood. So to help conceptualize better, I Photoshopped the scoop off an AC cobra hood and merged it onto my car.

As it sits now:

I'm not sure I would like to spoil the lines of that hood - the vast curvy expanse looks just fine IMO. However, were you to do this I reckon you need to be more sympathetic to the shape of the car, i.e. not square, as nothing else on the car is square. I don't know what shape of scoop might work though. What about vents instead ?

Worth pointing out that non-OEM / aftermarket hood scoops are considered at the extreme negative end of the ricey scale over this side of the pond, especially if they don't actually serve a purpose (though I get that yours probably will if you are changing the engine), so don't take any negative comments personally :D

Believe me, my feelings are not hurt.... :)

"tacked on" and/or non-functional hood scoops get a "rice" branding over here as well.

I agree fully that the curve of the scoop needs to flow with the original lines, but I'm having a hard time working out how to do that and still get some area under the scoop to do some good. As I mentioned, I'm envisioning a big carb style air cleaner under there pulling cold air down into my V8, so functionality needs to be there as well as looks.

In then end it might not be workable, but photoshop and day dreaming is both free and is fully reversible :P

Besides..... I COULD always go this route

I'm not as horrified as everyone else. It makes the front look like a 70s muscle car, and the shape of the scoop almost reciprocates the grill below the headlights. If 20 year old chavs didn't fit them to their Japanese grey imports, I suspect more people might be in favour of your idea.

i'd personally go with some bonnet louvres.

you can get them done so some let air in and others let air out.

don't do the scoop as you've did in your first post, but maybe making vent in the bonnet is a great idea. just make it like its done on some E46's or some more race car intake style.

wekk if you are swapping the engine for something non BMW?? then a scoop will be the best way to get the extra clearance you need. Otherwise I'd fit louvres as they look good on M3 etc

I wouldn't fit a scoop like that. To my eye ity's just ruining the flowing line of the long bonnet and punctuates it 1/3 of the way back.

If you need spece for the engine then it may be an requirement, else louvres/vents seem the best way forward.
