E85 / E86 HIGH MILEAGE PARANOIA

It's the bragging about low miles I can't understand.

It's like saying "Hey, look a how lovely my favourite guitar is. I never play it.".

Cars like the Z4 are built to be used, and used properly.

It's a mindset thing, no major issues with my E86

WOW!!!!! I believe you just put yourself at the top of the leader board Sir. An obviously we'll loved, used and maintained example.

I daily a 2003 3.0i M54 and I'm about to hit 168,000 miles soon and I won't lie it almost makes me cry LOL. Though, if I die tomorrow, I'll be happy knowing I actually drove it! Nothing is ever permanent IMO and you can't take anything to your grave, so why not enjoy it!!

My Porsche has 15k, the M has 15k, the Jeep has 30k, the Abarth has 9k, the Golf has 30k, you can see why I had an issue getting a 91k Z with the SNP's missing money as rust attached to the bolts everywhere

At your age I wouldn't be giving mileage a thought....use them before you start pooping your pants and dribbling down your chin....not far off let's be fair.... :poke:

Speaking of which, John (of same age …), are you back to the usual 80% performance again? :poke:

For example, there's no need to go changing your oil every 3k miles, or buying the most expensive oil you can find. Just any half-decent synthetic oil at reasonable intervals will be absolutely fine.

Can I start a debate? Ask a question? As this is one of those well it works for me.

My car had a spotty service history and was abused before I purchased her at around 95k miles. I have annually serviced her with a specialist for the last 5 years and some of the oil changes have been at 2k miles and some at 6k as my driving varies and the deadly plague of 2020.

The last time I had an oil report done was in 2019 and I don’t think my car is sludged up but in my mind regular oils changes on a high ish mile engine helps renew the detergent and lube package in the oil hoping for a nice gentle mild clean. I’m on 106k now and the engine still sounds and behaves beautifully

Also I drive my car like I stole it so it gets a good ragging and taken though the gears and up to redline on he odd occasion.

I might get another oil analysis done just before my next service and do a 5 year comparison of regular low mileage oil changes.

Now saying all that if I was doing 10k a year I would not be doing an oil change 3 or more times in one year that is just ridiculous so I guess different courses for different horses.

I always like to do a oil flush prior the an oil change, helps remove sludge build up, but it's always nice to see a golden colour on your dip stick.

 fair point......I'd forgotten about that.....although having a look with a torch in the oil filler neck kinda gives a basic idea on oil condition.

Damn, i fall second with around 167770 miles (270,000 km's) on the clock. 2003 3.0i. runs like a treat. only issue i had for the 10 months ive owned it was just an o2 sensor. non engine related issues, my syle 108 rims lost a couple of bolts from the split rims haha. got that sorted when i immediately noticed the vibrations on the highway.

I think the linear way of thinking less miles=better and more miles=worse is flawed. IMHO Suspiciously low mileage isn't a good thing if it's not evenly spread over the car's age because it can suggest the car was SORN for long periods of time. Even worse is that range of say 80-100k which is when most cars generally start to show their age if they haven't been looked after. I've dabbled in Jaguars and Vauxhalls before and anything with a decent amount of plastic in the engine bay will start to suffer when you approach 100k in my experience.

Contrast that with a car with say 150-180k on the clock- seems high but if you think about it, to reach that mileage the car must be either a fundamentally robust design (i.e honda, lexus etc) and/or have been loved by someone. It will probably have been well maintained and have had the common failure points addressed, or it wouldn't have reached that mileage. What I'm trying to say is, often the mileage kind of whittles out the poorly maintained examples and leaves behind the cream of the crop.

Totally agree. I was specifically looking at a high mileage M54B30 so that i dont have to do most of the major maintenance. Looking back at the service history, a lot of the major seals and gaskets have already been replaced. A mate just purchased an 90,000Km Z4, so im very curious how much more he will need to spend at 100,000km

I hunted around for a low mileage 3.0 e85 two years ago ...settled on a car with 69k ( miles) on it ...since then I have been going through it ...manly suspension stuff...all the shocks were goosed and did all bushes and joints while I was in there ....M54 engine will probably out last everything else with regular oil changes . Car is now just over 80k and even the vanos are working ....at the moment!
Could have saved some cash and bought a higher mileage one with bits already done ! :o

I was very lucky with my specific pick. From the previous owners invoices, i saw that the Vanos system was rebuilt with the Beisan systems vanos rebuild kit. got lucky there. Its a "lifetime" rebuild apparently, only time will tell

👍...Don't get me wrong, the car has lots of history and has been serviced on time etc but it just needed a refresh after nearly 20 years
