DSC / Traction / Sport button

I'm just trying to get something clear in my head about the whole DSC / Traction / Sport button thing. I've searched and can't find a definitive answer.

Re this in the FAQ: [*] Pressing your DSC button briefly engages DST, allowing slightly more wheelspin. Pressing and holding turns off all aids and is not advisable.

Pressing it briefly turns the light on the dashboard on. How do you know when it's completely off?

Does turning the sport button on actually affect the DSC setting?

when the traction control is fully off you see the wheel spinning sign on the dash. the triangle one.

i call it the 'im going to die' light :D

No. On the standard Z4 the sport button stiffens the steering and increases the throttle response. On the M, which has proper steering, it simply increases the throttle response.

and in the auto alters the shift pattern - holds gears for longer...

and Tweed, no doesnt touch the suspension - it might in the new ones (E89) though.

heh... well bugger... all this time I've been giving more beans in the corners with Sport on thinking there was less roll, and it was all in my head!

Well, that means I can give beans at all times then :D

Let's not do the whole sport button thing again. On an M car, it DOES NOT AFFECT suspension or steering.

What I was aksing was if it affects the amount of slip allowed by the DSC.

But, I'm more interested in the DSC one-tough / hold down thing....

when you press the DSC once it allows the wheels to spin/slip more but the stability control is still on, the brakes are feathered to keep the car aligned.

when you press and hold for 4 seconds it turns the light that usually comes up when your wheels spin on constantly. all driving aids are off i.e. traction and stability control.

on the normal z4 the sport button gives better throttle response and harder steering. it does nothing to suspension, DSC etc

No.

One touch basically turns of the traction control - tried it a little while ago, don't think I've ever had off the line wheel spin before :) The stability control still kicks in if pushing too hard in corners though - I get the light flashing.

Never used the hold down function on the road (too scared I'll chuck the car in a ditch)... only used for a dyno run, but yes, you're on your own at that point! Wish I had the skills / confidence to go for it

EDIT: See I was beaten to it. Again.

Ok, now I understand (I think).

Press the DSC once and it disables traction but not stability control (corner braking etc) to stop the car spinning

Hold it down and it disables everything.

I still don't understand how the lights on the dash work.... When I press once, the yellow triangle symbol appears. Holding the button down doesn't light anything else up.

then you press once for less than a second DSC (i think) should appear. hold it for 4 seconds and the triangle should come up

OMG,,,, Ihave just read this thread, When i got the car i asked what these meant and the F**kwit salesman told me that pressing it once was to engage traction control partially and use this in the wet it aids with cornering and only use the full setting in snow and ice. OMG I mean OMG, i now feel luckY to be alive. OMG.
:o :o

what a fcuk1ng tw4tbag of a salesman, was that BMW?

you usually press it once for winter, snowy roads as it allows your wheels to slip a little without killing engine power all the time on the slippery roads

It was independant Garage, i guess i should have known better and checked it out for myself

Holy crap! That's bad.

Still, at least you'll have developed awesome + delicate throttle control now.... :)

Thanks for the pics, Pawn.

That DTC light definitely doesn't appear on my car. One press gets the triangle.

Is that a feature of the M cars?

Sorry, think us standard Z4 boys have been leading you on... now you've said it I think you're right, have a feeling the M system is different.
