Do you remember when . . . . .

Leaded Gas and no catalytic converters !
Drinkin' and driving was OK too.
Smoking ? It was good for you. Calmed your nerves !

The Good Old Days ?

Bumpy

Steel hub caps, petrol rationing books from the early seventies (IIRC), vinyl seats and after market up/down electric aerials.

The tiny green lamp on the indicator stalk and a solenoid starter button on the floor,,,5 star petrol and the smell of castrol"R". :)

You could work on an engine without being an electrician

Leaded petrol

Nodding toys and speakers on the rear parcel shelf

Fitting high level brake lights

You knew the rust points on all the cars

You also knew no matter what you did the rust would re-appear!

Fog lights connected to the brake switch whereas now you just see muppets running around with fog lights on regardless! :?

Had a full Webasto on my TR7 8)

The cloth bit was the part of a TR7 that did not rust! :D

Yep :D
Front wings and front nose panel just below the bonnet were particularly rust prone - rear wings too actually. I went through a lot of filler and cans of primer and top coat.

Parallel lives/times. My dad had a Princess, then went on to an Austin Ambassador (remember those?).

My first car was a 1970 1275 Midget mkIII.

The same as my dad although he had 2 maxis before the princess and then followed the ambassador with a montego and a few rovers :headbang:

Bump starting a car was quite normal years ago - when was the last time you bump started a car?

Back in 1967 my brother had a Frog Eyed Sprite.
He used to give me a lift to school every morning.
Not that he was doing me any favours. He never has.
But he would back the car up the (slightly inclined) driveway,
And I would have to push him and the car until the motor 'caught'
So I guess you might say I was the starting motor !

As a Student in Sheffield in the 90s my Housemate had a Metallic Bronze Nova Saloon which required a push start - two of us would push it down the Hill in Broomhall and then with the passenger door open jump in - as it was a 3 door door it took a level of dexterity to push - jump in the rear seat and close the front seat to allow 3rd man to get positioned in the front passenger seat.

I think if we'd found a good brakeman - Britains chances in the 4 man bob would have been drastically increased.
