Do you let anyone drive your car?

Well I took my mum out shopping the other day and I let her drive the car back home....BIg mistake! When exiting the car park she parked too far away from the ticket booth so opened the door and BANG  hits the door on the booth. Got out but luckily no damage. Anyway, on the way she kept clunking through the gears and I just couldn't bear it any longer and told her to pull over so I could drive the remainder. Goes to pull over and SCRAPE goes the alloys :headbang:

It felt weird and very nervy being a passenger in my own car, I was on edge all the time.

Anybody a passenger in their car and had a bad experience?

There's only a few people I let drive my car, and only then when they're fully comp on their own insurance (or track day insurance). The simple rule is 'you break it, you fix it'.

The guy I trust most with it is my friend/spanner monkey/ex-Aston consultant chassis & drivetrain engineer - I've even let him drive it at the 'Ring.

Never let anyone drive mine except at service time due to outlined above and ladies can't drive anyways :P :P
so even more reason not too :D

Tim.

 My wife is insured to, but chooses not to... I have no idea why

I let my brother drive it once, not far. He isn't a crap driver, but I was on the edge of my seat the whole way

Only the missus, she's now well aware of things like kerbs and wheel stops and other low clearance issues. Can't imagine letting anyone else drive though.

Only my wife... she's driven it twice, short journeys, and hates driving the car (needless to say, I haven't tried to dissuade her....). Loves being a passenger in it though  For anyone else to try and 'prise the keys from my cold, dead hands', they would need to be insured, responsible for any damage etc....... oh, and a driving god :D

My wife - all the time, but nobody else aside valet parking.

Choice is let her out in the Zed that worth about £7k or the Jag that's worth well over £30k. Both are my pride and joy so lesser of 2 evils really.

That said she takes the Jag almost all the time and in fairness is an excellent driver and has scraped one wheel on it in 5 years and never had an accident aside a bump in a car park in 20 years.

While we're both really careful, where we park, potholes, etc. it's still just an old car and can be fixed no matter what happens.

Ive let my lil sister drive it around an industrial estate....she loved it...

But other than that i havent, i wouldnt be too concerned though, as long as they paid for any damage done then i wouldnt mind...

Both my mum and dad are insured on mine, only to make it cheaper, my mum will NEVER be driving it for fear of the OP's story happening, my dad has driven it a few times both with and without me in the car and i have no fear it will come to any harm whatsoever

funny enough my insurance is due for renewal end of Jan and i will be adding the GF (really should start to call her my fiance now  ) to my policy!

She'll only be able to drive it if i break both my legs though :P

It will be interesting what happens if you are ever involved in a accident and parents are on it but you can't prove they are all regular users of the car. That wheeze is really frowned upon by insurers.

True if its the only car in the family, but if you have multiple cars and drivers then there's nothing they can do, it's reasonable to insure all cars with all drivers that might need to drive it. (They need to move the car off the drive onto the road etc)

:o How could you say such a thing Tim!

My other half is on my policy.

She drove it 10 metres and said she didnt like it.

I breathed a sigh of relief. . . .

The other half has driven my car twice.. for a short drive so I could find a rattle. Lets just say it was a very nervous drive for us both.
