Do You Ever Get Nervous Driving At High Speed

Either because you might lose control and have an accident, have a tyre blow out, or get stopped by the police. How hard do you grip the wheel at high speed, are you laid back and comfortable with it, or do you sit bolt upright all tense and alert gripping on for dear life. I'd be interested to know.

If I get scared I just close my eyes and count to 10. It's worked every time so far.

I was a bit nervous when I was going rather fast the other day and passed a police car going the other way.....He immediately put his lights on and I thought "oh s**t" I pulled in to the next lay by as I thought I might as well take the bollocking but he never turned up....but no I never feel nervous...I do in the Westfield as everything is a blur and you realise that you are on the edge of crashing all the time

I would say if your not comfortable driving at high speed don't do it. Why take the risk there's already enough dangerous drivers on the roads these days.

I've done quite a few top speed events and I'm usually more worried about the engine blowing up at 170+ than anything else.

Dont drive that quick in the car but on the bike my brain is working overtime looking for white vans and lumi vests at the side of the road.
As has been said already though if you get nervous driving at speed so much that you tense up or change your driving style you probably shouldnt do it.

I don't get nervous by the speed itself but yes I'm constantly expecting a cyclist, or tractor or someone pulling out of a side road etc, it's partly living in the country with so many variables, and getting mullered by an Audi shooting a junction at 80-100 mph last year, it's definitely taken some of the fun out of going for a hoon.

As long as you are driving at a speed where you can stop in the distance seen to be clear then what's there to be nervous about?

It's more of a risk assessment for me.

I feel as comfortable sitting at 140mph on an autobahn as I do at 80mph on a UK motorway, but I know that most German drivers will check their mirrors before pulling out into faster traffic.

I don't get nervous at high speed, and grip the wheel only tight enough to be in full control.

I do however concentrate more and scan my surroundings faster, so that I can hopefully pick out hazards and be ready for them.

Still prefer to do 50-60mph on a twisty country road than whatever speed I'd have to do on a motorway to make it feel 'exciting'.

Did get up to 48mph down here once on our one and only dual carriageway - scary experience so backed off !

The faster I drive the more focused my concentration becomes and greater the buzz. I have to ration myself though. Nervous? - Never :driving:

are you looking far enough up the road, taking everything in - the further you look the more relaxed you become ;)

plenty of additional training available if you desire...

I don't get frightened by speed at all, but as mmm comments spend a lot more time scanning the road, anticipating where an danger could arise., etc. I'm relaxed, but focussed and in control, but my mechanical sympathy does increase dramatically as minor bumps on a road at 30 can become spoiler damaging crunches at speed and so on.

Actually the only time I get really scared is some of the extreme off road events an that's at 10mph, but the consequences of sliding off mountain ledges down sheer drops, into ravines, driving downhill on sheet ice, etc. are not only a wrecked Jeep to recover but serious chance o injury. Hey but the buzz is amazing...

The prospect of the fuzz makes me the twitchiest so i try to stick to the speed limit +10% for the most part  i stretch that when i get onto roads + areas i know well & are quiet & unpoliced .
Different rules when in France though :driving: i know that a tug there is only going to cost euros as opposed to points or even court / loss of licence ?
29yrs driving / average 20k year / No accidents in that time & only had points twice ( currently have 3 from 18 months ago doing 36 in a 30 )

Yes I do get a little nervous sometimes, so I slow down until I'm comfortable again. I guess I'm older and wiser than when I was younger, seen too many people embedded in the front of tractors & others things that "weren't supposed to be there, around that blind corner".

For me, it's the bends on B roads that are fun, not the a straight line top speed. I still drive fast, but I'm usually most comfortable at 80% rather than, balls out, 100%.

Probably doesn't help that I'm a horse rider and a cyclist also, as I'm always expecting those whereever I go... kinda spoiled it for myself ;)
