Depreciation!

i went in bm yesterday offers of 3.9interest but only £ 5995 dealer discount.on new z4 didnt get a price on the m z4 with 27000 miles 0n a 2006 plate .but really thinking about changing now.

The new interest rates are good, but it doesn't make up for the fact that the prior deal even at 4.x% was cheaper because dealers were throwing nearly double that in as a contribution.

Maniac i did try to get more no joy even with inside info off my son just not doing it now.i have always liked the new shape and the boot is good for when we have week end breaks . i am wondering what they will offer on mine.

Just had a look at the deal on offer now and cant get close to my deal ordered in March so am feeling very pleased with myself even though it will depreciate like mad I dont care will probably keep it for 5 to 10yrs and then give it to my son its the last car am buying just for myself to play with. 8)

Brand new my car cost 104,000 Francs thats 72900 not including tax. Needless say cars are expensive in Switzerland but used cars especially a high end used cars is one of the best buyers markerts. my 2011 35iS dropped from 104 (72.9pounds) down to 54k (37.8 pounds) inside of 16 months. I picked it up with 22,000km on it for 54k (37.8k pounds). Prices of high end cars drop considrable within the 1st year and a half almost losing 50% of its value on mine. Why would you want to take the 50% hit on your hard earned money? Better to let someone else take it and find a nice gently used one. Car came CPO with extra 2 year warrenty pushing it out to Feb of 2015 and full free service out to 2021.

My well specked 2009 Z4 with just over 30,000 miles on the clock and after going to a few places to look at trade in prices, best I got (this is main dealer's of BMW, Audi and Land Rover) offered was £16,000!! :? Sooo glad I didn't buy it new!!!

I agree that buying new is a total rip off when looking at it purely financially.

Paying thousands extra just to have the new car experience is silly, even though I've now done it twice.

Buying used saves a lot of money, but how do you know the car hasn't been thrashed?

i.e. I've had several loan cars from BMW and most have had under 1000 miles on the clock, so not run in. Never did they ask me to go easy with the engine etc, so assume other drivers would'nt have appreciated the run in process and possibly therefore not been sympathetic to it. Those cars then get sold on...but not run in correctly.

Likewise with other used cars, if it looks clean, you never really know its history.

So its not just the new car experience that is being paid for, its the full knowledge of the cars history etc.

Saying that, if it was the choice between buying used, or not at all, I'd buy used!!!!

When i come to sell mine, I could sell it through the forum. "One careful owner"
After saying that though, i did run it in even though it bored me.

Running in is not as critical as it was in the olden days. What is probably more important is getting the whole system warmed up before booting it.

I agree this is important and also some gentle driving as a cool down. A bit like being in the gym really. Warm up, work out and cool down.

Someone asked me the other day, "How much is your car worth"?
Well, as we all know there is the 'list' price, or the 'market' price or whatever else type of price you may wish to use. However the price or worth I use is the one where someone is willing to pay 'price'.
I'm at the other end of the scale, where my 'poor man's' Z4 was bought for £3.5k. If I sold it now I reckon at a Conservative estimate that I would get more for it. At least £4.5k.
Why? because I have spent well over a grand getting her ship shape and sorting out all of the jobs on it. So in effect, I haven't made any money even though she would likely sell for more than I bought her for. At least that's what I reckon but could be wrong of course.
My point is though, I would imagine that if my car was parked next to a newer Z4 version of mine with all the bells and whistles, there may be someone who would appreciate mine maybe as much if not more for whatever reason. If no-one did, then so what? I wouldn't know anyway and as we all take pride in our own motors first and foremost, it doesn't really matter who's cost what or is worth more than so and so's. Thoughts? or has this post run it's course?

It's all relative. I've lost £8k on last car over 8 years. In same time frame I've gained over a £100k on my house. Now if I was buying a new car every 2 or 3 years and loosing 10 to 20k each time I'll be angry but I'm not going to do that. I'm buying a new car to enjoy it. I will enjoy the fact no one else has ever driven it, that new car smell, it being the exact spec I wanted etc. I will not be thinking about how much it costs me as I don't care. Hopefully I'll keep it for a long time, the ideal would be keep it until it's done 100k miles and is 10 years old, at which point I'll look back at serveal years or fun driving. If I do get to 10 years and it's worth bugger all I won't care. At the end of the day what price do you put on driving with the top down on a summers day in a fast care with a massive grin on your face?

Depreciation is just a way of spending money really the 2 z4MC's 'cost' me 15k each over the period I owned them but it was what I wanted so it would be odd to complain about it ,as others have said just regard it the same vein as spending on any other hobby

I bought new as the cost of used was MORE in the AUC scheme than a brand new one(this was for my E70).
