Depreciation!

I believe buying a car like a Zed is not necessary.

I agree! Mine was bought as a toy to use in the sunshine, nothing more. If I were to sit down and analyse what its cost over the nine months and 3kmiles that I've had it, then I'd be in for a shock.

Life is too short to worry about cr*p like that when you get to your second childhood! :D

Sadly chaps, this is why I don't buy cars new.

I bought my zed 2 yrs ago for £9k cash. No trade in, no finance. Private purchase.

Now, I would value my car at £6k (probably less). Depreciation isn't too bad for 2yrs ownership.

Would I buy a new zed outright? No chance. Would I but an s2.0i on PCP? Maybe

I really feel for the owners of E89s that have suffered mega depreciation. Sign of the economic times.... :(

Just bloody pay the money and drive them :driving:

We've all wasted money and will never learn, to me ppl that smoke are throwing money away, they may see my car obsession the same, but whatever u get enjoyment out of who cares
Unless ur v clever everyone's gonna lose out on cars
Tomorrow we could wake up unable to walk
When I'm 70 I want to be comfortable in the knowledge that at 19 I had a z4, at 25 an Aston, at 30 a fezza, at 35 a Lambo and then at 40 finally grew up, sounds like fun to me

Well you only loose if you trade in..So i suggest you to keep your zed and loose nothing at all  Even bank deposits are not safe anymore in Europe so its better to keep your tangible goods for now

You are indeed correct, I will be keeping it and making the best of it. Lose the rft's and see what that does, and I've a little damage on an alloy I need to get sorted, but that's easily done.

Cheers Guys

I am glad to hear that  Ditching runflats will make a great improvement!

 Will it?

Tim.

I went for michelin primacy hp non runflats from continental runflats and it made a good improvement in ride comfort! The ride is a bit bouncy only over pretty bad surfaces otherwise it is very comfortable! The suspension setup for the e85 could have been better though. BMW has definetely got this wrong and I read it was designed for non runflats. There is always a tradeoff between ride comfort and road holding with passive suspension systems. Last year I worked on an active variable geometry suspension system for road vehicles at imperial college for my thesis and the simulations were impresive when we applied it to a Ferrari F430. I wish i had such a system on the zed but is still under development. However the e89 should be much better in that respect. I also noticed an mpg improvement since changing tyres of about 2 mpg

Funny you mention smoking: a few years back I was out in central London with a colleague who drinks/smokes a lot, offered him a lift home in the Audi TT I had at the time. When he saw it he was asking 'how the hell do you afford that', so I added up his approximate monthly spend on cigarettes & vodka (West End bar prices!) & worked out the payments on the car were less!

Think he was shocked but he still smokes/drinks! :D

Whether new or used it's really what you're comfortable with - for a toy I'm more comfortable spending £8k than £40k but then I have the worry of maybe spending wads of cash on unexpected repairs . With a new car you have no worries for 3 years , no going over it with a fine tooth comb before you buy it - all you're concerned with is the colour and spec. Depreciation is a reality that either you're concerned about or not - all the people I know who change their new cars every two years seem unconcerned and just enjoy their cars - the thing with our cars is that they're so expensive when new the depreciation looks so much worse.

It's already been said several times - you only live once - do what you want before North Korea starts a nuclear holocaust and we all get fried :(

Possibly the large discounts to be had is because there's a new shape car out soon? 6 year production life cycle ?

Like some have said its what you are comfortable with I dont smoke ,drink a little bit when I feel the need but my cars have always been my thing through MGBS, RS Fords, Seat Cupras,Mercedes, Beemers the list goes on and why stop when you hit 40yrs when I had my children i had xr3is, RSTurbos, Calibras and now I cant wait for my 35imsport to arrive even though I am coming up to 60yrs I could have brought another house with all the money I spent on cars but enjoyed them hell yes but my golden rule is never buy one I did not have the money in the bank to pay for wether I buy for cash or finance but Deprecation thats a fact of life only once in my life have I got the same back as I paid for a car and believe it or not that was an xr3i I had for a year. 8)

6 years is too low IMHO for that type of cars...see the e85 which is 10 years old and still looks fresh!

I always look at it from a 'cost of motoring' perspective. If you get a good PCP deal, as someone mentioned on here, you're effectively renting the car for a pretty reasonable rate - BMW throw servicing in, no MOTs for 3 years and 99% of stuff taken care of under warranty. Care free motoring for 3 years for an all-in payment.

I bought my first Audi 2nd hand outright in cash, it depreciated 7 grand and I had to spend about £1000 on servicing, another £1500 in repairs, it needed new tyres shortly after buying which was £700 three MOTs, one requiring work adds in another £250ish, take into account the year of tax that gets bundled in the PCP from the dealer too, thats £270 = £10,720 - cost of motoring for 3 years technically £298 per month for a 5 year old car. Brand spanking new Z specced to my exact requirements on the PCP deal - £400pm. I think it's worth the extra £102 a month.

Using the PCP calculator on the new car configurator can give you a good idea how much the car will be worth at the end of the contract. The Z4 certainly doesn't fare very well in holding its value against a 1 series for example.

Eg: A Z4 sdrive 28i M sport auto list price £39k. GFV after 3 years £14k. That's just 36% of its value retained based on those figures.

A 3dr 1 series 125i M sport auto list price £27300. GFV £12000. That's 44% of its value retained over the same term.

Things of beauty alway seem to be higher maintenance versus things that aren't

Lets not forget...whatever it costs, we get to play in a lovely, fast, fun Z whenever we want to. What do you value that at?

You don't get into a dull 5 door hatch (however fast) or people carrier of doom...you get to flick the heated seats on, turn up the heater and get the hood into the boot...then drive with a BIG smile :D
