Deal or insulting...?

Been looking for a convertible again after driving a hatchback for way too long. This board has some amazing looking Z4's and I think I'm pretty set on getting one.

Found a few in what I thought was a good price range but one has stood out and I personally think the price is high (even for the current market in the US). 2007 3.0i manual with under 40k miles and in bad need of a detail. The seller claims the blower motor resistor is bad and that the top doesn't work unless manually moved (I assume hydraulic pump but could be electrical). They claim they can't get the parts due to supply chain issues but I've been able to find them all via various sources already so that seems a little sketchy. They are asking $15,000. Another seller has a 2003 with under 50k miles manual in good operating order for roughly the same price.

Would offering $10k for the 2007 be way too low? Or reasonable given the fact that I can't confirm what parts it actually needs, just going off what the dealer is "claiming" is wrong.

Overall it's a pretty competitive price for Z4's in my area but $15k with unknown work seems a bit high to me. Appreciate your input!

How much would the same car be valued if it had no issues?

At those prices you may as well get a specialist who imports cars to get you one from the UK. There's a guy selling a 3 litre on here for £3k. Which is about $3600.

Then spend a fortune moving the steering wheel over??

Its difficult to advise on the US market - I think you'll find that most of the members on here are in the UK. Z4 prices seem to be vastly inflated compared to over here.

Except it would be wrong-hand drive and worth almost nothing when it comes time to sell.

People shouldn't fire from the hip if all they have are blanks.

Even in Continental Europe used prices are roughly double what we pay in the UK. This is the best country in the world to be a used-car buyer.

I'd use the $10k as a starting negotiation point. If there is work which needs to be done (and if you can provide quotes for the work). This will help argue a discount. Plus the risk involved with uncertain fixes (like the soft top could be electrical as well as the pump).

Having sold a few cars of my own in the past, I advertise for maybe a little over the real value of the car? Because I know there will be some sort of haggling involved. So this way it'll roughly equal out - assuming its all good and no fixes needed. We sold our e53 (first gen X5) for peanuts because of the issue with the exhaust manifold (I think it's a engine out jobbie to sort).

To be fair, whilst he may be old, both hips ar relatively new.

$15k is not a bad price for those low miles and the 2 issues you mention won't be all that expensive to sort out.
Take the car for a PPI at a BMW dealership, that is your best bargaining chip, they'll find a few things that need work then offer him $13k and drive home with a big smile on your face.
Good luck

That's more polite than I usually get!

Normally it's "Pick a window, you're leaving!" :D

How so?

There's a guy who just bought a Swiss Z8 in the UK and it wasn't cheap and its a LHD in a RHD country.

People buy imports all the time. Mustangs are popular in the UK to be shipped over for one. I don't see why it wouldn't work the other way around.

Welcome to the madhouse OP. As you can read above, Brits don't know much about the American market. We do love our Z4s though. Hope you find a good one and stick around. :driving:
