Dash cam with rear camera

Hi all.

Thinking of getting a dash cam for the Zed now but wanted to guage some opinions. (When the time comes i will ask/do some more reading on the best place to wire them from)

At the moment i am looking at something like this : https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07V1NPX9X/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A15BGU8R5B4IOD&psc=1
As it includes a rear camera... i am just dubious about putting a rear camera in due to a) wiring b) what the overall look would be.

Anyone on here with rear cams mounted? Is there a better / more discreet location for them?

Originally i was looking at a single front facing camera (with Wifi) so this wouldnt be a question really, but any thoughts?

Cheers

Nick

Plenty of people seem to have them, and the most obvious place to put the rear camera is above the number plate.. but i saw one the other day and felt it was a bit obvious.

I'm sure someone on here bought a small probe-type camera from aliexpress and drilled out the middle of the rear BMW badge and fitted it that way... pretty sure it was one of the first posts I ever read when I joined the forum a year or two ago!

If you find posts by member Anubis Zed he fitted a dash and rear camera to his E89. If my memory serves me correctly has has made a video of the process. He is very approachable and helpful.

there are various E85 replacement number plate lamps that include a reversing camera. look on ebay. still need to wrok out how to mount a useful screen without it looking "tacked on"

I think this is going to be the solution for me. I really would rather not spend that much but I do miss having a screen!

i have a unit just like this in my X5 BMW...its hopeless. as soon as there is any sunlight nothing is visible on the screen. i would suggest you get a good look at the exact unit before you commit. Also, surely the double DIN sized screen will partly cut off the vents??

I have just invested in a Garmin 56, hardwiring it into fuse nos 2, cannot recommend it more because

- it is designed to sync with other Garmin dashcams in the car, OTA, so no wires between the two (they have a mini cam for rear) to enable dual or triple channel sync’d recording
- has a really handy app, where u just connect in-car to choose what you want, edit the clip then download.... so no surrendering the memory card or using a pc!
- magnetic mount so really easy to remove
- very small
- speed camera alerts are annoying but can be disabled
- easy controls & nice rear screen
- 1440 resolution available
- and I think when connected, anyone else linked to the camera can also view live footage.

The most logical place for the rear camera in my opinion would be between the roll bars assuming you’re not in an e86.

Id be reluctant to fit an external cam for this as it will get dirty and wet so may not be very clear at night if it’s grim outside. I’ve noticed this with our mini’s reversing camera when doing a long journey in the wet.

The best location I've seen for rear mounted camera is in one of the roll hoops. Films well out the rear window

Ok so i went and bought the Crosstour discreet dash cam with rear camera too.

Next question........ what have people done to wire these in? Ideally i dont want a cigarette socket doubler and wires everywhere. Thinking of a blade splitter in the glove box and wiring that to a short wire/cigarette socket then just using the original wire. I can hopefully run this up the pillar and accross the roof section to keep it hidden?

Rear camera......... i have no idea what route to take yet!!!!!!

There is a guide on here about wiring a front-facing dashcam directly into the wires found above the center light at the top of the windscreen. Only thing I needed to do was file a small cut-out in the plastic casing that goes around the base of the rearview mirror so the usb cable stayed nice and neat.

That's how I fitted mine and it works perfectly; no need to run wires down the A posts and into the fuse box, although that is an option also. You would need a 12v to 5v converter (pennies on amazon) and one of those spade connectors that spice two wires together, but otherwise straight forward.
