CSL Replicas - Reliable?

I have a set of Apex wheels. I wanted the ARc 8 but they don't have the clearance for the AP calipers so went for EC-7.

Very nice wheels and pretty light, but slightly inconvenient to get in the UK.

Also agree 18s are much cheaper for track rubber. And tyres generally of course.

Now that is very handy information indeed. Which AP set are you running? I run the AP setup with the narrower front caliper the CP5575.

Bit of a bummer if there isn't an Arc8 setup that will fit over the APs as I was led to believe they were lighter than the EC-7...

Hmmmm

I will PM you - I had a very lengthy correspondence direct with Apex about it.

Same calipers.

On Tom's car I think his 224's looked awesome and a bit different.

x2, love Tom's 224's they really contrast and compliment the Silvery Grey, look really aggressive. Hard to explain but I really like the look of the side walls of Tom's tyres....Tom, what tyres have you got on the 224's?

I'd like to get my 224's refurb'd in a different finish, but not sure what would suit the Carbon Black finish. Shadow Chrome, flash chrome, hyper silver?

I think its the PSS that have "attractive" sidewalls :P i noticed it when i put mine on!

I have to say i would definitely consider going for the Morr forged rims, they are in a different league.

Cheers Jimmy. If I had a spare £4k I'd go for Morr also!

I looked at the Apex ones but i couldn't decide which i liked! Need to find more pics of the EC-8, i think they're the winners.

Where did you see them for sale?

CA automotive seem to be the only place so far I have found that sells them:

For anybody interested, genuine CSLs on eBay for £1450 ono. 5-6mm on rear, 4 mm on front. A few thousand miles before you'll have to change the tyres.

I have no interest in the auction.

Think they're CS wheels. 255 width would be a proper stretch on CSLs at the rear

Edit - maybe CSLs - looks like 9 1/2 J on rear

Yes, rear on those is only 9" not 9.5"

CS wheels are still 9.5 J on the rear, exactly same part number as CSLs its the fronts that differ. The CS fronts are 8 J wide not 8.5 J.

yup... correct.

I have CSL replicas fr.o.m. BM Autosport and they are working just fine, I have bought them for My M3's as well, never any problem.

I take care of them just as I would take care of any wheel = with love.

Is My superlow milaged M ruined now? ;)

I get why people buy CSL's but they worsen the handling and ride quality which is presumably why BMW fitted the car with 224's. The only reason to fit them is aesthetic. The weight saving argument is a load of bollocks. After all this is a road car and driving to Tesco the unsprung weight reduction won't matter a lot. Ok, I know, I'm exaggerating but you get my point.

But as nice as they look I'm getting terribly bored by them at the moment.

On Tom's car I think his 224's looked awesome and a bit different.

I think those VMR's (is that the correct name for the wheel dubsed has fitted?) look a lot better. A lot more original too.

The Guvnors right if you really are concerned about the affects of wheel weight 18s are the way to go.

I am considering a move away from CSLs as my track wheel to set of 18 inch Apex Arc 8s. Lighter than CSLs and the 224s and look pretty tasty too:

Not to mention more tyre choice at lower prices for 18s

I use my CSLs for the road (aesthetics but crap ride) and 224s for the track (cheaper tyres and better performance).

Personally i see both sides of the argument... And each to their own... But to fuel the flames a little (not that it needs it!)

When getting my wheels a few years ago i found weights of them and the VMR vb7 (or whatever they are which look like csl) actually weigh less then the genuine article.

Also you could get some Morr's or forgestars which look similar enough but would be far superior quality, weight and cost a lot more.. Are these still considered reps?!

I always thought the VMR wheels were heavier (5lbs per wheel) than the OEM CSLs?

I don't think the vB7 or Morr's are reps as they are different styles. It's a bit like saying the 1M's (359m) wheels are CSL reps.
