Cracking dashboard Grommit!

As we are entering winter I've noticed a loud cracking noise from somewhere behind the dash in my 3 month old 20i.

It happens maybe 10 minutes after startup when the weather is particularly cold.

Seems to me it's obviously something warming up and expanding, a bit worrying as it sounds just like a piece of plastic snapping. I just wondered if any others had experienced this. I feel like taking it back under warranty but I know it's going to be a difficult fault to demonstrate and track down.

Ive got a rattle coming from around the rear view mirror (i think!!) only when the car's cold, it goes after 10 minutes or so when warmed up....annoying as my drive to work is only 3 minutes! :x

Unless he drives at 150mph to get there which would mean he has to walk over 7 miles

i have the same thing in mine, only thing I can liken it to was in my previous car when my windscreen cracked while I was on the motorway. No idea what it is though

We had that on a 530d at work ... it went in for repair - and the windscreen was loose !!

I think I can rule that out as I have had a new screen and it did it before and after.

How can a screen be loose though :?

Daft question I am sure, but are you sure it isn't the sun visors? The vanity mirror sliding covers rattle, as well as the visor itself against the top trim. I resorted to sticking small soft pads to each corner, where it contacts the trim which has cured it.

Don't think so Gaz, its a single CRACK! sound after about 10 minutes of running, just as warm air starts coming out of the heater vents. It comes from somewhere behind the instrument panel.

Seems like the colder it is the louder it gets. It did it again this morning!

Having looked at ISTA, and you stating that the noise is central, the most likely culprit is the heater vent tubes buried inside the dash. It is a recognised fault and there is a fix although whether I would want the dealer taking half of my dash out to fix it is very unlikely.

Hi what is 'ISTA' ?

I would get a cracking noise early in a journey. Thought it was the cheapy plastic trim around windshield expanding with the demister heat rising. Also iDrive rattle.
Sprayed silicon bumper spray around every joint and seam I could find and all quiet last 12 months.

Hi what is 'ISTA' ?

ISTA is the BMW/Mini Technical Workshop System (Integrated Service Technical Application)

Its a bitch to use but covers everything BMW. It is the system Franchised Dealers use.

am i the only one looking for a "...Grommit" at the end of that title?

Nope. Only reason I came into this thread was to add a Grommit but I see I am too late.
