Considering chopping in the Z and Merc for this...

Just don't think I'm the Porsche type.

Whats the Porsche type?

Is it a bit like the stereotypical BMW driver? Then you come on to forums like this and realize we're from all walks of life.

Not meant to offend, a reflection on my own style.

It was a actually a genuine question, is their a Porsche stereotype in the same way as the proverbial "bmw rep tailgater" etc?

I think this is a personal thing that you maybe cant explain.
When looking for a car recently my wife said i should look at the Merc ML series and the newer equivilent. I couldnt do it, I just couldnt see myself in a Merc and being comfortable. No other reason really.
The same goes for Porsche, I asked her if she would ever swap the Z for a Porsche in the future and it was a straight NO.
Dont blame her, couldnt see myself running about in a Porsche either.

Personal prejudice innit, you care more about your perceived image of the brand or label than the car / product itself, which is a series of components cobbled together rather than a flavour or ideology. It's interesting that you find this behaviour on a forum of hairdresser's car owners :D :poke: Something we all must get over, or ignore if you are to buy a Z4.

sure, there's an ideology in how they choose to pick and assemble components, but that's as far as it goes :p

Thus, i conclude you're losing out because of your own (or partner's) preconceptions. I suspect this applies to most of us. I wonder how many awesome driving experiences we miss out on in life because of this?

Where do i get my cookie? :P

So I guess this comes down to a head and heart decision (as so many car buying choices often are).

The Z is paid for, just past its MOT and you've got a lot of history in getting it where it is today.
You could change for the 6 series, a lovely looking and obviously well equipped car but are you changing for the sake of it because you want something new?

The Z is very capable, do you perhaps need a good drive in the Z to remind you what you love about it? Might be worth rekindling the magic before you make a decision....

As for the Merc, I know exactly what you mean about the grotty gearbox. Ours has done 8k now and it's due its first service. The door cards creak and rattle over uneven services and the notchy gear box is getting on my nerves driving to and from work!

Don't you have to offset the Merc payments though as you are currently paying those now?

Merc would simply be returned, it's equity neutral at the moment.

Tbh while I'd love the 6, I'm just back from the local dealer with my Z having passed its MOT in year 7 without issue, then add in no repayments and well....

Chances are I'll just hand the Merc back and get a cheap tank. That's what my head says... My heart however...

Spending £440 on something special is almost justifiable - because you can consider it a passion, or a hobby, or a deferred reward for working bloody hard. Won't you be a bit miffed at £440 for a diesel 6 ? As nice as it is, if you can't afford to buy it cash and forget about it and drive it like any other barge - I think this alone will niggle/annoy you for the entire ownership experience - at least that's my view point.
