Clear light and Angel Eye Conversion - The Project and Story

I looked into the light upgrade and it all so requires extra looms being run in from the LCM to each light. It's not a easy mod at all and very few have done it.

It's time, not money

Get the bits and I'll guide you :)

I will give it a go, I did run my own bodyshop for a couple of years with some mates. But when it came to electrical bits thats when I left it to other people.

First of all i love your work.

I have purchased AE and will be in opt in couple weeks.

is it possible to tell me or show me where exactly I have to cut? and what kind of tools i have to use.

Thanks.

Welcome and thanks for the compliment.

This is one of those jobs that you'll have to improvise and 'feel' what is right. I'd like to say it's easy, but... OK it is but oyu need to take your time and think out each step.

I take 2 sets of lights. The set I intend to keep. These I cut the clear lens off close to the black plastic body. I tend to use a dremmel with 1" cutting wheel. It slices it up well. Using a Stanley or very sharp craft knife clean the U channel out after I've puled he 5 locking pins out.

The donor lights are just used for the new clear lens. Here I just bust up the brittle body of the light and then trim off all the remaining plastic and adhesive. You now have a complete set to rebuild and a good few spare bits of light.

The AE tubes - just drill and dremmel out wherever you feel the wires will look right and fit the new transformer in the rear of the unit. High temp silicone everything but remember what will be visible forever through the lens.

You need operating theatre cleanliness once you assemble as every spec of dust, fingerprint or mark will show one day on the lens. Don't touch the silver inner at all else it will mark and scratch

Hope that helps, but PM me as you start if you need help

that looks amazing! i want to change my indicators to clear. even without the AE it just brightens up the front.

great quality job!

I’ve got a 53 plate and I want to take the orange inserts out of the headlights, me and my bro did this to his supra and it was easy but this sounds a bit harder.

If I try it do I need to buy a set of clear inserts? And where can I get them from? I’ve tried looking on the net without much luck.

Haha - if it were that easy I would not have gone to all this trouble.

Of course you can't buy inners, nor can you take a Z4 light apart (although someone in the US is supposed to have done, but never proved it...) You need to either buy them off a scraper and use them plus your own to make a single 'good' set, or find a good set in perfect condition. For the latter expect to be in the £600 region for xenon, perhaps a little less for halogen.

if i buy scrap ones will just about any year be compatible?

The clear lens inside is identical on all years. US are different to UK with some having a third indicator/bulb in the upper corner.

You re-use your base unit (the black rear of the light and fit on new clear lenses that can also come off any year or style.

Good luck in searching as they are well sought after

Ok thanks for the advice, much appreciated. IL let you know how I get on if i get any luck. Thanks

I am about ready to do the conversion, but I am not sure how to do the wiring for the AE. Where should I connect the wires to, should remove the wiring for the halogen lilghts and connect the AE wires to it? Does the US/Candian Z4 have the side lights that you have in the UK. HELP!!!!

I wired them into sidelights that we have in the UK. These are small bulbs fitted below the main beam halogen bulb, in the inner part of the light unit (ie to the centre of the car) No idea if you have them in Canada.

Frankly it's up to you where you wire them, be that as sidelights, daytime running or any other feed into the light you want to use. Pick your supply and a brown earth lead. In my case I fitted bullet connectors, so I could revert to stock if any MOT test station took exceptio to them as sidelights.

So are your lights split down ready to install?

I had spare light chopped up already and I am ready to work on the real ones this weekend. It's going to be tough and scary cutting up the lense.

My car is at the bodyshop getting the aerodynamic kit upgrade and they are going to take out the headlights so that I can do the conversion and give it back to them for installation.

Thanks for your help!!!
