Im interested, but need to be sure I can separate both halves with very little damage as I don't want to buy a second set of lights. I have a dremel and some patience. Hopefully the price won't be much higher!

This thread needs a bump... £160 saved for these very expensive hockey sticks.

For those willing to do this, is there someone central with space where we could all turn up at once & undertake a bulk fit, allowing us to share from each other's knowledge & not screw up alone in some dark corner?

I'm assuming once the headlamps are open we'll all want angel eyes as well...

Most people here are relatively handy so more than capable of this. Obviously I've not done the mod but I bought a light a couple of weeks ago and cut it open. I went through lots of discs but the light I bought had "issues" as someone had opened it before and glued all the inners and the lense with some kind of super duper miracle glue plus I was using a cheap crappy Dremel copy.

All this said, the light is still in a state that I could easy stick it shut again and fit it to a car without it looking like it had ever been opened. There are also plenty of people on here that have done the mod and are all regular posters and very helpful so advice and morale support will be readily available. Not to mention all the advice already in the monster thread on the subject.

In short, this is doable for everyone if you have time, patience and a Dremel type tool.

Like everything, easy when you know how, just felt if it were possible for a number of us all to meet up in one place & undertake the mod at the same time - lenses + LED angle eyes any issues could be easily addressed.

Let's see if we can get that magic TEN who want to de-amber & if even if we get close might still be economic...

Thanks for posting that link Ranski. Everyone does need to be fully aware of how the mod is done before parting with cash.

Peddy. Yes, it's just the lenses and £160 is mega cheap. If you got your clears for less then you were VERY lucky or very early with the mod. As Adamski says they will set you back between £300 - £500 now and the worst part is you have to butcher these very expensive lights and throw about 80% of the parts away.
What if I told you I made a profit? :fuelfire:

Is there an ignore button on this forum?

I did mine a couple of months ago, for around £250 all in (this included a set of donor lights). I have my original xenons sitting in a box ready to swap back over when the time comes to sell my car, so i should get most of the money back eventually, meaning the real cost is nothing.

If you keep an eye out on other Ebay sites, such as those in the US and Germany, bargains can be had.

Edit: Anyone converting from pre-faclift orange lights will need to consider what they want to do about their indicator bulbs because you wont have the orange domes to tint the bulbs.

andrewr, I wrapped the domes in silver film that was transparent.

Andrew is referring to the actual bulbs. There are no 'domes' on pre- facelift lights with orange hockey sticks, so people need to be aware. I wrapped the actual clear bulbs in ultra high temperature Kapton tape so they flash orange.

Thanks Matt, you explained it much better than I did!

Next GB will be for some ultra high temperature Kapton tape then. We'll all chip in for a roll. :D

I have some spare bulbs so will work out a solution. I believe C10Jeepr tried painting the bulbs but it didn't work out. Orange ones will be available somewhere. BMW often share Phillips branded bulbs with Volvo for some strange reason only the Volvo ones are always cheaper.

Just a wee point to note. We are going to need a set of lenses to send to the manufacturer so they can make an exact replica. They will need to be in perfect condition, orange ones will be fine if anyone has a set spare.

Just to correct this point. The prefacelift DO indeed have the glass domes over the bulbs on UK cars. They are amber in colour and go over standard white bulbs.

Other comments:
Wrapped the amber domes in mirror effect window film - been perfect for years.
I never found any amber bulbs despite ages looking, so did 2 things:
Painted the bulbs amber using glass paint to make them more amber and counter the mirror film. It's also been perfect for years.

Are you sure about this? My headlights didn't have the orange domes when I chopped them open. One was a german headlight, but the other was a UK headlight, and neither light had the domes. There is no metal clasp/holder for the domes either.

Andrew.

I have opened a fair few amber headlights and none of them have had the orange glass domes, nor holders
