CF roundels - opinion

Fitted my c/f badges yesterday in the bloody freezing cold! Took a couple of hours in the end, but I was just being really cautious, and spent quite a lot of time on the bonnet one. Didn't take any pictures in the end, as went round to my parents to do it and forgot my camera. I think they look 8) and really freshen up the car.

My observations on fitting:

Bonnet - This is the most awkward one. The front grill removes quite easily by pulling the bottom first. You then need to get behind it and loosen the fittings, I had a bit of trouble with this but got there in the end. As mentioned elsewhere, the supplied badge is 73mm whereas the original is 70mm. Not having the luxury of a dremel, I used a manual file on the back and kept filing a bit off and trying it until it looked ok to my eye. I tried double sided foam to stick it, but this just raised it up again so used silicon in the end.

Side indicators - Just used a sharp knife to gently prise in between and cut the foam backing off. Not too difficult. I also found that I needed to file down the two plastic lugs on the indicator a few mm as they were stopping the new badge fitting flush. Clean, attach with silicon, then put masking tape round and left overnight.

Rear badge - As I have a coupe it is a bit different to the roadsters. The badge is the same size as the side indicators, and again is just stuck on with double sided foam. Used a knife again the cut the foam and gently prise off. Have to be careful here, as you are working right next to the paintwork and one slip with the knife could scratch your paint. Again here, I had to file down the two lugs behind the badge (metal this time) to stop them fouling. Used a towel to protect the paintword from the metal file. Used silicon here to seal and masking tape to hold until set.

Wheels - These are a piece of cake. Pop out the whole inner fitting with a knife/screwdriver. The plastic piece that holds the badge is in two parts. Seperate, and take the old (slightly rusty in my case) badge out. Clean the plastic bits, peel the backing off the new badge, stick onto the bottom piece and clip back together. Push fit back into the wheel. You could probably do all four in a few minutes. One question - should they go a certain way up, in terms of them lining up with the little ///M badge on the wheels?

///M - Badges - (Sides and rear). Again really easy to remove as only held on by double sided tape. Clean the area. The only difficult bit here is refitting the new ones as there is no point of reference like for the round badges. I took some measurements of the existing ones before I removed them, and then just stuck the new ones on using a ruler and a spirit level to get them located correctly and level. Also had someone to help with this as an extra pair of hands is useful.

The only one I haven't done is the steering wheel, as Im a bit concerned prodding and buggering about with it having the airbag and reading the comments earlier in the thread. I may decide to leave the interior unchanged, unless anyone can convince me its relatively easy to do.

Noticed today that the door sills have red/blue ///M badges too, wondering if I should change those :D

Will post some pics when I get chance to take some next weekend.

I was concerned over messing with the steering wheel too, and as the new badge was self adhesive, i've put it straight on top of the other one and it doesn't look bad ;)

Glad you got it done  Bet it looks much better

BTW - I found from a thread ages ago that the best way to get the centres out is with a suction. No risk of marking the wheels getting a fine blade in.

mmmmm......didn't think that would work but i'll try it and see what it looks like

Loads better! definitely a mod for silver/grey/black cars. Thanks for the inspiration from the original thread :D

Well seeing as it's quite a warm night I just poped out and fitted the carbon badges and took a few photo's :camera: (sorry they're not best quality done on my phone and not in the best light):

1st comment - didn't feel the wheel centers fitted quite as well as the OEM ones but good quality non the less.
2. - My rear badge had no sticky tape was a simple prise off push on jobby.
3. Side indicators - nothing complex here, just cut off two lugs and silicone on (if like me you glue them whilst not fitted to the car so they can glue lying horizontally make sure you remember to put them one on the different way round up or else you'll have one upside down when it's put on the car. Only other thing i did was spray the orange bulb with a light coat of silver paint (hammerite came to hand first lol  )
DSC00152_1Large.jpg
and before you ask... I've done this loads of times before and never had a bulb go and they flash just as orange as before.
4. Front grill removal is as stated before a simple pull from the bottom, pic shows clips

5.Next pic shows underside of front bonnet badge. Use 10mm socket to remove. Lugs on the underside of the carbon badge were too short to re-use the original fastening method so siliconed the badge into place. Bumper is plastic so no worries about using silicone for this badge.

6. Next pictures show how i removed material from underside of the badge to give the underside of the badge a dished profile so it mounted properly into place.

Well i'm very pissed off, went to the gym last night and when i came out my cf boot badge was missing :o

It didn't fall off as i had to get my gym bag out of the boot when i got there and it was fine, so someone must have stolen it! :fuelfire: :fuelfire: :fuelfire:

Ordered a new one last night so hopefully it will be here tomorrow.

This is the only reason I won't be opting for the CF badges.

Since owning my cars Ive had 3 broken into, 2 smashed windscreens (vandals), a spoiler ripped off, a mirror kicked off, my old mini was keyed on every panel (by my ex's ex bf :x ), ariel stolen and countless amounts of dust caps stolen.

I know the CF badges would be on my car for a matter of days before they ended up blue-tacked on some chav's bedroom door :x

Here's a few pics of my vanadlised cooper :( :

My mate has his 'ST170' badge ripped off his Focus. It cost him around £25 for a new badge, and £200 to repair the damage they did to the bootlid getting it off

Not worth the hassle IMO, but they do look great :)

Theiving sods
Not had anything done to my Z yet, but it spends most it's time either in my garage or at work where it's not likely to get touched.

The worst I've had is when I delivered pizza in my parents Polo and one of the guys there for a while was a complete A-hole. Opened his door into mine, gained several small key marks on the side of the car within a couple months, then one day had a screwdriver stabbed into the sidewall of a new tyre :headbang:

That's a real shame.
Sadly the problem of bonding it on too well is that if the tw*ts have a screwdriver they'll just damage the car trying to remove it.
IMHO I'd just put the new on on and if it recurs then worry, but life's too short to get overly concerned.

Keying a car like that - well that's police and insurance. I'd best keep out of Wolverhampton then

That's shocking! Some people are scum

I'll have to keep my fingers crossed as my car is in car park all day.

If ihad to keep replacing them I think I would just put the originals back on.

Hope it doesn't happen again.

When it happened, the police didn't want to know and the insurance company (churchill at the time) didn't cover acts of vandalism so it never got repaired. I had quotes of £750 for a full respray but the car was scratched all over until the day I sold it :(

The same lad that did it also keyed my (then) girlfriend's black Mini One which was about 3 months old :(

Her car was then stolen a few weeks later (possibly by the same guy) and dumped the other side of Wolverhampton with an empty petrol tank and the wheel bent right back into the arch like they had nailed it into a curb :( when the theft damage got repaired, they also repaired the vandal damage at the same time.

Here are a few pics of the car at the recovery yard:

and this is how they got in and stole the keys:

The moral of the story........don't come to Wolverhampton.

(sorry to hi-jack the thread)

Ugh.. I hate reading things like this.. reminds me why I made sure I've got a garage at my new place, I can't sleep when I'm not happy it's secure.

I can recommend one thing though.. steal your own badges before someone else does. Much prefer mine without.

My car is very safe when parked at home, but people keep vandalising it when it's parked somewhere else!
Like when the badge got stolen at the gym last night, and i was parked right next to the gym entrance! I've had my wing mirror ripped off before when i wasn't parked at home.
There are some real arseholes around :chophead:

Some bugger nicked my bog standard "Z4" badge from the tailgate, when I was parked out somwhere (it's always garaged at home) - quite why someone wanted that badge I'll never know...

Luckily left only the slightest of marks which is barely noticeable.

My Dad had a standard M3 a few years back and someone nicked the M3 badge off the boot, really don't know why they do it :?

to stick on the back of their boggo cars so that they go faster

This is why stealth debadged cars are best :)

Just slip under the radar and blend in. Shame if you like your car to shout out (I give a crap about my car and stick carbon badges on it), but hey ho. Personally I'd rather put pennies in the ESS TS2 kitty that gets hidden under the bonnet, than carbon badges :D
