CF roundels - opinion

tedster
Thanks - I put a call into one of the eBay suppliers listed here and he's doing me an entire set all sized to the Z4 with a guaranteed exchange or refund on any that don't fit, I don't like etc. It will take around 7 to 10 days to arrive as 1 is out of stock but frankly I'd rather have them all OEM quality and from the same source.

It will be 1 bonnet, 1 boot, 2 side repeaters, 4 wheel trims and 1 steering wheel centre.

It would be unfair to put the price on open forum as he's done a deal but anyone who really wants to know details PM me.

pvr - this is too small a job to count as a mod

I installed my CF roundel on the front last year (mine is sapphire black w/dream red interior). I used white reflective tape and used it on the rim caps and used gray/black reflective tape on the rear roundel. I too didn't care for the sky blue in the roundel much to the chagrin of my fellow BMW CCA chapter mates.

Did they say what size they're providing for the front?
Most of them are supplying 72 or 73mm
The Z4 requires 70mm for a true fit w/o modification.

If your vendor is supplying the correct size it'd be good to know

It's a 73mm bonnet badge 82mm sides and boot, 65mm wheel and 45mm steering wheel

As suspected the bonnet will require a little fettling to drop in but having measured it won't be far out

It'll be nice to see what the finished look is like! I may probably PM you ask where you got it from and roughly how much it costs!

Sure - I'm awaiting delivery as the wheel roundels were on back order and I'm insistant on all from one supplier so we have a match not 'nearly'

I'll certainly post some pictures when done, although you'll probably see it on the streets of Sutton

Here are some samples of emblems I played around with :P

They arrived this afternoon and were duly fitted in about 30 minutes.

I'm very impressed with the quality. Even the wheel inserts are dished and resin coated Vs the usual ally disk or even worse stickers. Bit of cutting as previously posted to get the bonnet roundel to drop in. Side repeaters cut off with a sharp blade then siliconed the new ones on. Boot a straight push fit.

Photos to follow tomorrow when it's light.....

Looking forward to pics as this is one of the mods i had in mind even before buying the car.

Quality wise are we are talking as good or better than the OE badges ? they sound great

I'd say we are on a par with OE here for the side, bonnet and boot. Wheel inserts I'd say better and steering wheel is totally different being resin coated rather than a stamped ally disk. Fitting is not as easy as for the bonnet and sides they need 2 sided tape of silicone and the pegs don't align being generic.

Interestingly the rear of each is stamped 'BMW' and has a date of production matrix. I doubt though they come from BMW

I noticed that as well.... they must have a way of getting the blanks.

I had a reply from the supplier that they are not surprisingly sourced from the Far East. The manufacturer claims to supply BMW but I'd take that with a pinch of salt.

Anyway here are photos of each fitted (appreciate that the weave of the CF, silver borders and sunlight plays games with the camera, creating an illusion of fuzziness, wheras they are precise and all identical)

and thanks for your help pointing me to a supplier and the initial photos

Looks great. I like the look, especially on the wheels. How difficult was the installation? Did you have to customize anything to get them to fit -- like the sidemarkers?

Not difficult really. I made reference earlier in the post to fitting but in detail here we go:

Boot lid - a straight push fit swap
Wheels pull the caps out. Unlip the 2 part plastic mount , switch roundels, reassemble. 1 minute per corner.
Bonnet. dremmel some off the back of each roundel.silicone to body as pegs not long enough for twist nuts to function
Side repeaters. Cut off old roundels with craft knife as they were overly well held on with donut shaped double sided tape. Siliconed new on. Exact match
Steering wheel - PITA Original is an aluminium disk clipped into the airbag. Prized off and worked the lugs out with a small bladed screwdriver and needle pliers. Siliconed new in place (Caution - f'ing about on the centre boss of the steering wheel that contains and airbag is stupid....but I do know what I'm doing)

( BTW - I like clear silicone as a bonding agent. It sticks to anything, conforms perfectly to shape unlike 2 sided tpe, never rots or falls off and is easily removable simply by cutting.)

Can you get a better picture of the steering wheel and wheel roundels.

Look like the steering wheel one is not as good as the others, which really puts me off getting them.

Believe me I want to do it and think it will look goos on black

Please ??

It's identical to the others is every detail, finish and quality, just smaller.
If I can get car, camera, pc and time all together during daylight tomorrow I'll try another picture
