Car Sales Men (People)

Both my brothers have been new car salesmen, one is now a general manager of a volvo dealership and the other moved on to another industry.

Really does depend on the group, dealership, managers and the sales staff. My brother's dealership has a 96% customer satisfaction score (highest in the group). The lowest scoring Volvo site in the group has a 26% satisfaction score.

People also seem to think there is a sizeable margin in new cars. There isn't.

If anyone wants to buy a new volvo then my brother can probably get them a favourable deal; PM me.

There's sizeable margins in anything if you are dealing with ignorant retards !

The Audi dealer didn't sell to me - but he was selling plenty cars !

Being a good salesperson really couldn't be any more simple, you need to be polite, and have an in-depth knowledge of what you are selling. That's it.

All this "it's a special deal, you must buy before X date/time" or any type of pestering just makes me walk straight away.

 A bit more to selling than that! Unfortunately this type of mass shipem in - shipem out attracts standard kit of uninterested Burton suit and fat tie with Base slip ons - car salesman/estate agent/recruiter. Its when you step away from the waste of the general public scum it becomes an interesting career.

Net profit around -2%

I'm starting to feel sorry for them :D
You don't see many shabby showrooms tho ?

Showrooms have to be to dealer standard.
they make the money on used cars, service hours, parts sales and back end new car bonus.

Pretty far from the truth. If you want to do well then it means working 8 til 8, working weekends and working your days off to hit your monthly targets. A Lot of following up on customers you seen throughout the week on your days off too.

There is no work-life balance; It's entirely work apart from maybe 1 day a week where you can do what you want but usually get phone calls from the dealership throughout the day for any number of reasons.

I meant from the customer's point of view! Obviously they have work to do behind the scenes but as a customer I don't care if they're working an hour a day or 24/7, as long as when I deal with them they're polite and have a good knowledge of the product they are selling.

a load of people are after a "deal" though and they often expect the absolute earth for their old sh1tty car they are wanting to trade in and want maximum discount on the new car they want to buy.

You're a super easy customer if you walk in,salesmans introduces themselves to you, finds out your needs and what your looking for, shows and talks to you about your options, takes you for a test drive and then you buy it there and then or when they call you after you've had time to weigh up your options.

I think this type of attitude sums up why the general public are not massive fans of the profession .

There are some good ones out there irrespective of their tie width

As has already been said. Unfortunately there are a lot of compete muppet salesmen that don't listen to their customers, are only interested in the sale, making their commission etc etc and are always trying to upsell something else and generally being a know it all ass.

Yes, not every car sales person should be tarred with the same brush... I've had numerous dealings with used car dealers as well as high end brand sales people who have ranged from excellent, can't do enough for you, aren't pushy and OTT etc to the complete dregs.

The other end of the scale, want to be your best mate, will do everything and anything to reel you in, promise you the earth and once the deal is done, drop you like a hot stone. The transaction with Audi last year to get the S5 was pretty awful from start to finish. Real wide boy salesman giving it all the chat and patter like we were complete and utter idiots. Perhaps we should have levelled with him and told him to pack it in.... This is one experience with one dealer but it's the one that sticks in my mind.

I've purchased several new cars & motorbikes over the years but on reflection I prefer to buy privately

To be honest, in my opinion, all car sales persons are just a necessary evil. I treat them all the same, with the contempt they deserve. I always go prepared, file full of vehicle information, loan information etc. That puts them on the back foot right from the off. They don't like knowledgeable people because they can't get away with s**t. I always ask for the best price right from the get go. No. Let's see what I can do. I'll just have a word with my manager crap. I have walked away from deals in the past because they didn't give me the best price first. Two of my friends have been car salesmen in the past. A bit of insider information helps. Would I buy a car from my friends? Would I b@ll@cks the dodgy buggers. Just my opinion from experiences I have had.
Rant complete... :P

I have noticed on quite a few occasions "Car Sales Men" getting a bashing on the forum.

I try not to class myself as one of the above, I simply make motoring dreams a reality  .

My question is... WHY? Why do you think we are hated so much? the only thing I can think of is from the past when costumer law was less protective of the purchaser.

Here are my findings with just over 2 years in the trade:

Customer lie more than any sales person I know, its shocking.
We just want to help.
If we don't come out on the pitch and offer help were ignorant, if we do were harassing (cant win).
You as a buyer have more right than ever, more than you should in my opinion.
PCP can be a good way to get into a new car, depending on circumstances.
There isn't always any more to give (some people on here assume they could always get a bit more)

My advice if your buying a car:

> BE OPEN, tell the sales man how much you want for your PX (if you know) and your budget. This is not poker.
> Be reasonable, if you want money off then justify why.
> If you go away and want to think then change your mind, let them know. They wont call you again.
> Be Honest!! If you dont like the car etc, just say so. There could be other options or it just kills it dead in water. We wont be offended.
> We Buy Any Car wont save you thousands.
> Finance deals can be beneficial, let the sales man go through it and see if it works for you.
...... Oh and please don't say how much for Cash!

Hi Popey, it might have gone down better if you had confessed to being a traffic warden instead...

Bone idle lazy gits driven only by reward. Out of all the dealerships I visit and that's pretty them all, I can count on my one hand those I'd ever buy a car from.

Make that six, the op sounds a decent chap
